An artist's depiction of an Extended Unit Death
I grew up where it was overcast most days of the year, where it rained a lot. I didn't like the rain; I had to walk a little more than a mile (~25-30 minute walk) to and from my bus stop, and the rain was no friend to me there. Sure, jackets and umbrellas: luggage to carry for this long distance, if I was fortunate enough to have them with me (a clear morning and afternoon showers was commonplace). Then, even when leaving prepared, I have a clunky umbrella or soaked jacket to lug around with me all day. I just got used to being drenched when the weather whimmed it. But never did I enjoy it, and I was convinced the only people that said they liked rain were the ones that didn't have to truly experience it: those that would run outside for a few minutes and then go back to a warm house and change into dry clothes; those people don't enjoy the rain, they enjoy their conveniences and leisure and simply misattribute it. Walk in it when it isn't your choice, when your clothes look like they're being transferred from the washer to the dryer, when you have to sit in a chair and hear the water escaping your jeans, when your feet feel like they're sitting in a chilled soup inside your shoes. Only then could you tell me if you liked the rain. You bet I preferred the warm sun.
Snow was a different story. Snow was rare, snow was fun. Build a snowman, school is cancelled! How could you not enjoy it? Well, aside from having to shovel it to get the car out of the driveway? That, and the power tended to go out because of it. And it's really cold, did you know? As fun as it was, it really beat you up, even though you equip your favorite puffy jacket to battle the elements. My face was on fire, but in freezing temperatures? That's okay, I can go inside. Unless I need to fetch some firewood. Or shovel the snow; have you noticed how unintuitively
heavy snow is? No, this isn't fun. This isn't rare enough. I'll be damned if I build another snowman; I already made one this year! Inside became my favorite location when it snows, so I can't honestly say I enjoy it as a weather. I enjoy staying inside with a warm cup of hot chocolate, watching the snow from the safety of my home, and as long as the power wasn't out for more than a few days, I would be happy. No, winter is not my favorite climate, either.
That leaves one, surely? A nice, bright, sunny day. These are all very well, even if it became so bright it was difficult to see; squinting is not worthy of complaint. The thing I looked forward to in all four seasons was those rays of light telling me it would be a good day. Well, three seasons. I didn't grow up with air conditioning (it's rather uncommon in the northwest), and some Summers liked to remind me. We would get heat waves, causing the house to become a hospitable temperature of over 90 degrees well into the late evening; we couldn't get that hot air out of the house until long after the sun had set. "Only" 90 degrees, yes: to Hades those places that hit three digits Fahrenheit; they only serve as more examples of this unacceptable climate! Maybe I have less of a right to complain, but I have that right nonetheless. What can you do on a hot Summer day to cool down? The measures are certainly more difficult than throwing an extra blanket on the bed, the suitable reaction to a cold winter day. It came as a relief when it rained, and better yet, I was on vacation, so I needn't walk through it if I had no such inclination. If the sun agrees not to attempt to destroy me, we can get along just fine, but that's the extent of my sunny day appreciation.
So, that's what I grew up with. Now I move away from the rainy, cloudy climate and switch to that more akin to the desert. The sun can fuck off at this point; I'll stay inside with the AC as it tries to melt the city. And why does it snow so much?! Is Winter trying to compete with Summer here? I learned that I
hate driving in snowy or icy conditions; I'm shoveling snow so I can partake in an activity I won't enjoy.
I miss the rain, the sound it makes, though I have no desire to tread in it for extended periods of time. So, conclusively, I like the weather I am used to the most. The weather that some consider gloomy, but I consider comforting.
My favorite type of weather is a nice, overcast day.
