With the introduction of Augmented Reality Visors by technology conglomerates in 2015, an entire virtual landscape had been constructed and carved into the world, opened to access by anyone with a pair of AR Visors. The visors are often simply dubbed "glasses", and their assimilation into society proceeded at extraordinary speed. Virtual and real soon blended with each other, and the cybernetic soon became a part of everyday life, with many digital items substituting for what used to be real. The populace was not, however, aware of the dark secrets held by Megamass, who had acquired the intellectual property and research behind AR Visors in unscrupulous ways from the Coil company.

Within Daikoku city, a few destined citizens stumbled upon the existence of an undocumented cyberlifeform, dubbed "Illegal". This fated encounter would lead the group toward a quest to uncover the secrets hidden in the city's cyberspace, in honest pursuit of knowledge. Little did they know that at the same time, Megamass was alerted to their presence. Their agents immediately infiltrated the group to begin a silent mission of purging the irregular citizens and illegals from their network with only one goal in mind: leave no survivors.

General

1) Players receive roles when the game starts.

2) Roles are assigned by Random.org.

3) Megamass Operatives know other Megamass Operatives. The other factions are ignorant.

4) The game alternates between day and night (game time, not real time). The intro covers the first day, and the actual game begins at night.

5) Players may communicate in whatever way they like. Feel free to lie, cheat, and trick people in order to come out on top.

6) Offline players and non-players cannot post while the game is running. Sharing information with online players through any other means is also frowned upon. If you wish to have a "last will," some final words you will share in the event of your termination from the digital realm, then provide them to me via PM before the time of your disconnection and I will incorporate them into the post.

7) Handing out information just because you died or don't like your team (i.e. an ex-Megamass Operative listing off remaining Megamass Operatives) is not allowed (violation results in list of shame, etc).

8) One may not request or volunteer screenshots, videos, etc. of another role screen or someone's password via the thread, a PM, or any other method. This includes screenshots of messages from me which confirm, depict, or otherwise suggest your role or alignment. This also includes extortion outside the game, or any other method used to acquire accurate information. In addition, arrangements which involve backing information with something of value are not allowed. The game is intended to be won via behavioral analysis, special roles, and praying a lot. It can be assumed anything which undermines this intention is not allowed. You will auto-lose if I find out you've been partaking in these ancient acts of evil. (For clarification, sharing the text that a PM supposedly contained is not in violation of this rule.)

Signing Up and General Notes

If you have any questions, PM me or post in the thread.

Citizens

Novice Researcher - Each night, the Novice Researcher looks through various documents to uncover useful information.
Uncover: Spends the night attempting to discover the identities of the Megamass members through diligent research. The document they find will include a clue or other information relevant to a member of Megamass.
Falsify Documents: Chooses a player to frame, and creates fake evidence pointing at them. The document they make will include a clue or other information relevant to the target. The Novice Researcher will know how the document incriminates the target. This is not a visiting action.

Novice Detective - Each night the Novice Detective can choose someone else to follow discreetly, forcefully apprehend, or openly accompany.
Shadow: Follows a player unnoticed, seeing who they visit and what roles visit them.
Distract: Prevents a player from performing any night actions.
Escort: Prevents a player from being the target of any negative night actions.

Novice Hacker - The Novice Hacker was not taught the ways of deep infiltration, and he could only reach the data pertinent to the numerical votes tallied at the end of each day. By exploiting vulnerable backdoors in the voting mechanism, he can place an extra vote, but the system's cybersecurity measures will close the backdoor he opened immediately after he uses it to vote.
Rigged Vote: The Novice Hacker can discreetly place an extra vote after opening a backdoor to the voting mechanism. The Novice Hacker can submit a new target via PM if he wants it to differ from his public vote.
Defer: During the day, saves the backdoor he opened to use at a future time, giving him one additional vote at any given time. Extra votes can be accumulated indefinitely and used in any quantity.
Analyze: Visits one player at night and checks to see if their voting mechanism has been tampered with.

Novice Programmer - Each night the Novice Programmer can apply a metatag to a desynchronized cyberbody, synthesize additional metatags, or defend a player from Illegal attacks. The metatag is part of a post-exposure treatment, and does not prevent future desynchronization.
Synthesize Metatag: Creates half of a metatag.
Use Metatag: Restores a desynchronized player that is not yet turned into an Illegal. Requires a metatag to have been previously synthesized.
Protection: Protects target player from being attacked by Illegals. If already desynchronized, it delays their data corruption for one night.

Cyberforensic Investigator - Each night the Cyberforensic Investigator can find out the infection status of someone, regardless of if they are online or not. He will also be informed of any other traces of abnormal tampering with their target's data.
V-Scan: Reveals the infection status of the target player.
Disassembly: Reveals the infection status of the target player, as well as any traces of abnormal data tampering. Can only be used on offline players.

Expert Hacker - The Expert Hacker has mastered the ways of invasive access, capable of inserting remotely controlled malicious programs into the core of the target player's AR Visor. Once his code is successfully implanted, with the touch of a button, he can monitor their actions, swing their vote, or worse, frying their AR Visors permanently.
Insert Spyware: If the target is not visited by another player, the Expect Hacker inserts spyware into the target player's AR Visor, alerting the Expert Hacker of who they visit from that point on.
Insert Trojan: If the target is not visited by another player, the Expect Hacker inserts a trojan into the target player's AR Visor, allowing the Expert Hacker to silently control their votes with ease.
Activate Trojan: Activates the trojan and changes the targeted player's vote, after it has been planted. To avoid having his suspicious activity being traced, the Expert Hacker cannot use this ability two days in a row.
Insert Virus: If the target is not visited by another player, the Expect Hacker inserts a highly complex virus into the target player's AR Visor, allowing the Expert Hacker to remotely fry their AR Visor at any given moment, taking them out of the cyberworld immediately and permanently.
Activate Virus: Triggers the self-destruct sequence of any previously virus-attached player, frying their AR Visor. Can be used at any time. If the Expert Hacker's visors are taken offline at any moment, the Virus will trigger automatically, frying the glasses of afflicted players.
Transmit: Submits an anonymous message to any previously virus-attached player. Can be used once each day and night for each target. All previously virus-attached players gain this ability as well, except Illegals, and their messages are sent without anonymity to the Expert Hacker.

Novice Architect - Each night the Novice Architect can attempt to modify the virtual world's map and temporarily create barriers, allowing him to completely split everyone into two separate groups. When this happens, no one in either group can affect anyone in the other group. This will only seal off players that were listed by every Novice Architect that used their power that night, as conflicting edits resulting in inconsistency will be sniffed out by Megamass's system and corrected.
Separate: The Novice Architect submits a list of names which include up to half of the remaining players. Names which were on the list of every Hacker will be in their own group for the night, completely isolated from the rest of the players.

Shrine Maiden - The Shrine Maiden lives inside a shrine that is inaccessible to searchmatons, granting her immunity from their attacks unless she visits someone else.
Passive: Searchmaton Immunity: Unaffected at night by searchmaton attacks, unless she visits someone else.
Denullify: If the shrine maiden leaves her shrine to visit an illegal, the illegal's data will restructure itself to become coherent once more, curing the player of the seeming irreversible affliction.

Encoder - An enigmatic citizen of Daikoku city, no one knows what the Encoder's backgrounds are, nor what the Encoder is capable of. Rumors say that an Encoder possesses enormous computational power as well as the ability to directly edit the contents of the cyberworld without even lifting a finger, exceeding the capabilities of even top cyberworld hackers.
Powers: ???

Megamass

Megamass Searchmaton Controller - Each night this Megamass-employed security personnel can send out cybernetic war machines to attack a target player, but since the action is technically illegal, the Searchmaton Controller must forgo the assault if any witnesses are present.
Stalk: Sends a searchmaton to follows a person at night, eliminating them if the opportunity presents itself.
Investigate: The controller himself will follow the person at night, gathering information about their interactions.

Megamass Hacker - Each night the Megamass Hacker can discreetly tamper with one person's AR Visor data from within their company's servers, inserting a Trojan that allows him to control their votes remotely at any point in the future.
Insert Trojan: The Megamass Hacker inserts a trojan into the target player's AR Visor, allowing the Megamass Hacker to silently control their votes with ease.
Activate Trojan: Activates the trojan and changes the targeted player's vote, after it has been planted. To avoid having his suspicious activity being traced, the Megamass Hacker cannot use this ability two days in a row.
Analyze: Visits one player at night and checks to see if their voting mechanism has been tampered with.

Megamass Researcher - An expert in cybernetic research, the Megamass Researcher is extremely adept at control and discovery of information. Not even Megamass is aware of the extent to which this researcher's enormous talents can control the world.
Powers: ???

Megamass Infiltrator - A cunning specialist devoted solely to the art of artifice, he has developed a powerful cyberchemical compound that makes the human mind extremely vulnerable to suggestion for a short period of time. The target will not remember being dosed or that they received a suggestion. To make his infiltration perfect, he used the compound on the other Megamass operatives, telling them to forget his identity until they meet him again. He then used the compound on himself, with a recording he made instructing him to do the same.
Perfect Guise: This ability is passive. The Infiltrator begins the game believing he is a Citizen, and has the possibility of being any role. His true identity will never be revealed to the Citizens through clues, investigations, or even cyberdeath. If he visits or is visited by a member of Megamass, both of them will remember his identity. If all other Megamass operatives become offline, the Infiltrator will remember his own identity. If the Infiltrator dies, all Megamass operatives will remember his identity, although his Citizen role will be the one made public.

If he remembers his identity, the Infiltrator still retains any abilities he had from his Citizen role. On each subsequent night, the Infiltrator can visit the other Citizens and use his trusted relationships to surprise them with a silent transfer of the cyberchemical compound. They quickly forget about the encounter, and become momentarily susceptible to suggestion.
Suggest: Can only be used after remembering his identity. Targets a person at night, also stating a suggestion to provide them. The suggestion must be 30 characters or less in length, and cannot be written in abbreviations, misspellings, or other shorthand. This ability can be used on the same night as any ability the Infiltrator had as a Citizen. If the target is not an Illegal, they will be initially unaware of the suggestion, but will act on it accordingly. The suggestion can be changed by reusing the ability on the target. If the target is an Illegal, there is no effect, and the Infiltrator is informed of the target's role.

Illegals

Null - A walking mass of corrupted data left from the deteriorating Coil Domain that has existed since the pre-Megamass days of the virtual world, it desires nothing more than to turn others into the same mass of tormented data that he is. Each night, the Null can choose one person to visit and attack, causing their cyberbodies to desynchronize and become corrupted. If successful, the target will join the Illegal alignment, and become a Null at the end of the next night.
Assault: Targets a person at night, attacking and infecting their cyberbody. The target will not be informed of who attacked them, nor will the Null receive any information regarding their success.

The original role of an Illegal is revealed in the event of their disconnection. For any starting Illegal, they will receive an additional role which will be used in this manner. Infection status is not made public.

Null can cast votes during a lynch, and they will be tallied as normal. However, when the day ends, they are not considered in determining who will die.

All members of Megamass have heightened cybersecurity measures to make them resistant to the Null's data corruption, requiring two simultaneous Null attacks to damage them. If they become infected and the time comes when they would transform, their AR Visors will self-destruct instead. The alignment of Megamass operatives will never change.

Any player that is assaulted at least 50 times by Null over the course of the game, or is assaulted at least 10 times on the same night, will die. Null do not attack other Null.

So many power roles... And I had hoped that last game proved the stupidity of roles with unknown powers. Now two of them? If you want my opinion, I think we should have a simple, original-style mafia game where the game is more focused on clues and scum hunting and less focused on how each role uses their complicated powers.

Unlike previous hosts I'm not going to give them imba powers. You should recall how much I complained about Beguiler being OP as hell, so I'm not about to unleash that on people playing in my game.

That being said, the role description gives you a pretty accurate idea of what their powers are even if it's not explicitly mentioned, so you should keep that in mind.

An artist's depiction of an Extended Unit Death

Oh, I was planning on hosting a classic game (you probably didn't see the discussion in the Shoutbox) after Inferno's game. But I guess it can wait.

I'm sitting out unless you can convince me that you'll actually complete your game this time, Aristocrat; so far you're 0 for 2.

I was unable to complete my first game because I became very busy IRL. I am aware of my schedule this year and will have more than ample time to host.

The second game was halted because people stopped sending in night actions, even though I had plenty of time to host. That was attributable to the setup being too complicated. The setup of my current game does not suffer from that, and thus I'll have better assurance that the players will remain active throughout.
