I've already expressed my stance about this (as opposed to just pandering for your vote), if that helps.
It's only natural that Aristocrat would want to run for election after those comments, but he's doing it for self-preservation as opposed to what he thinks is best for the town.

It seems poison has shown that he is willing to listen to reason, which makes him a more ideal candidate than Aristocrat right now.

Edit: I'm being told by someone who wishes to remain anonymous that something bad might happen to my moderator position if I run for mayor and don't support said anonymous person. I hereby retract my announcement of running for office and offer full sponsorship to Devlin for Mayor.

In case anyone is taking any of this seriously, I want to point out that no one should be deciding who they will vote for yet. The Mayor should be chosen based on the utility of their role.

I'll say this now so I can be held accountable later: If I have a role which has no business being mayor (psycho, veteran, mafia), I will immediately withdraw from the mayor political race upon reading my role PM.

We need a good leader. A dumb* mayor with a good role is worse than a smart mayor with a bad role. There's a smart-to-good balance that your statement is overlooking.

* Or rather, a player lacking experience, dedication, and/or time to make a good mayor.

If you want a Leader, you want someone that is initially unbiased. You want someone that will treat everyone with equality and only condemn those that have been proven to be on the wrong side.
These self-proclaimed "Mafia Experts" have their views all skewed from previous games. While their experience may help in some situations, their bias will most certainly get in the way of their decisions. And let's not forget that the roles are randomized, so their previous insights are useless here.
