Fuck the people with dial-up. That's like saying, "Not everyone on the site owns Starcraft 2, so we shouldn't have Starcraft 2 forums. It should be Brood War only." If they want to live 8 years in the past, let them deal with it.

Actually, since this is an argument for progression, the more appropriate analogy would be, "Everyone should have StarCraft 2 by now, so we should drop all support for Brood War forums because that stuff is old and this is 2012. Who cares about the people that can't keep up?"

We shouldn't try to alienate people because some members are feeling a bit greedy but don't want to contribute enough to the site to actually apply the increases they want.

I know 20kb is a seemingly ridiculous size in this day and age, but there are store items that you can get to increase that limit. Avatars aren't even mandatory to operate on this site and are more of a luxury, and to even propose "fuck other people, I want more stuff" is a very horrible thing to say. I don't think you realize how selfish you're coming across to me, but it's very disconcerting, to say the least.

That is how I have been getting by on SEN all this time. It is nothing too upsetting visually unless you have a bunch of gradients or blur effects on your image.

Problem being you cannot increase the signature size limit with store items since no such item exists.

PNG is lossless. JPEG is not. Sometimes JPEGs can be used a substitute, but not all of the time. Take a look at my avatar in 125 x 125 form:

PNG - 27.6 kB | JPEG (Max) - 19.1 kB | JPEG (Min) - 4.4 kB | GIF - 11.7 kB

For the JPEG to have near imperceptible quality difference, it is 8 kB smaller. In addition, JPEG lacks transparencies.

Thankfully a 100x100 avatar image is significantly smaller in filesize than a 125x125 image when saved as PNG :awesome:

In a lot of ways, lost resolution can be just as bad.

It's 100 kB limit on off-site hosted images as well.
I call bullshit. In case you're wondering, that is indeed 4 MB. I didn't compress it on purpose. Imageshack has a limit of 5MB per picture. If you need more than that for a png, a compressed one at that, you might want to consider bitching then.

What Sacrieur meant by that was even if you upload off-site, SEN's size rules says it can't be above 100kb.

Quote from Signature Upload Rules
Compliance to these rules will avoid your signature getting deleted!
  • Your ENTIRE signature may span a maximum space of 150 pixels in height and 600 pixels in width. No exceptions.
  • Max image filesize is 100 KB, combined total. People on 56k still exist, we do not want to absolutely kill their loading times. This may automatically be checked in the future if people constantly want 800KB images.
  • Be sure to click preview and check it before accepting it! It has rulers to show you how large your signature currently is. If you see "OVER OVER OVER", your signature is TOO BIG.
  • If you break these rules, your signature will be removed without warning. The only reasons things are not checked automatically because of possible compliance issues with javascript and because most people follow these simple rules. This means swift death will be brought upon those who violate them. You have been warned.

PNG is lossless. JPEG is not. Sometimes JPEGs can be used a substitute, but not all of the time. Take a look at my avatar in 125 x 125 form:

PNG - 27.6 kB | JPEG (Max) - 39.9 kB | JPEG (Min) - 25.2 kB | GIF - 11.7 kB

For the JPEG to have near imperceptible quality difference, it is over 10 kB larger in size. JPEG just isn't good with this sort of picture. In addition, JPEG lacks transparencies. No one should have to use an inferior quality format, really.
Maybe if your source png was of png quality you wouldn't have this problem. Also, specifically for your avatar, having lossless compression is entirely unnecessary.

Original: whatever size you said

JPEG: <4KB (not even max quality)
[attach=8366]
Yes, there are some visible artifacts. But I don't care.

EDIT:
Here, have one that is slightly higher than default quality (still not max).
[attach=8367]
This one you pretty much can't see a difference between the original. And is 5.16 KB.

I failed to account for the fact the stock image was JPEG, not lossless format.

Also, imgur seems to have used compression on the images I uploaded, I edited the post to match the true image sizes. This still doesn't undermine that JPEGs do not support transparency.

Yes, Sac, I realized about two seconds after I started typing what you meant. I kept going anyways to see if you'd play along or ignore it :sly:

In any case, I doubt the size is strict; I'd imagine up to 250 kb is considered acceptable. I know I've had some large ass signatures before, what with the animated gifs and multiple pngs...

With the modern EUD editors, I don't think they're calculating nearly as many offsets as you might imagine. Still some fancy ass work that I'm sure took a ton of effort
