Recently I upgraded my old dial-up for less-old DSL. For some resaon, I am unable to get on google. I get an error message telling me that it timed out trying to load it (or something along those lines). Anyone have any clue as to what to do? I use firefox. I have windows XP.

* Check the address for typing errors such as ww.example.com instead of www.example.com

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Are you trying to connect to .com or .ca or what?

Unlikely to be an issue, but check out your hosts file: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_(file)

There's an example there of what is expected in the file, if you've got additional stuff, post it for us.

Edit: More obvious problem is that your haven't got the correct DNS server settings for your new DSL connection. I googled this for XP, although it doesn't have any screenshots: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305553

Either you need to manually configure the DNS server on your computer (step 5 in first section), or get it from your DSL modem (step 4 in first section). If you get it from your DSL modem, then you may or may not need to configure your DSL modem itself - your ISP should have instructions somewhere on their home page for what you need to do. Either way, you will need to have the DNS server IP address information from your ISP - this should've been sent to you somewhere when you got your new connection, probably on the same page with your username/password and email settings (POP3, SMTP servers). You only need a primary DNS, but enter a secondary if they provided that too.

Manually configuring it on your PC should work regardless, though, but it means you'd need to manually configure it for all of the PCs in your house. In any event, you might be best to manually configure it first and confirm that that solves the problem, and once you've done that dig in a bit further as to whether you need to configure your DSL modem etc.

As a last (or perhaps first) resort, you can try using google's free DNS servers. Do this if you can't find DNS information from your ISP. This is an acceptable thing to do long-term if you want, depends on whether you trust your ISP or google more. Their DNS servers are 8.8.8.8 for primary and 8.8.4.4 for secondary.

Maybe it's a virus that redirects you. Use Malwarebyte's Antimalware to check/fix that.
Though it's unlikely since it just shows an error. Actual viruses usually redirect you to another site.

I did that and after the 11th one came up the command prompt box closed out.

Negative, the address bar still reads www.google.com (of course, i suppose a virus could potentially force it to read google.com anyway)

Ah the error message clearly shows that it's a problem with DNS resolution. Enter a valid DNS server and you should be fine.

google helps you translate greek If you don't know which DNS server to use, use google's for now (and maybe ask your ISP later).

If your DSL Modem/Router needs to be configured (as evident when it still doesn't work after manually entering a valid DNS server in your network connection properties) you need to ask your provider ('s website).

I just wanna point out that you told me to google something in a topic about not being able to open google. (The boldened link)

For no reason, I can now use google. (Don't lock the topic it might happen again sometime)

Well if you're not going to bother following the instructions on the page that I linked to, which is very straightforward on what you need to do, then I'm not going to bother helping you any further.

Don't get your panties in a bunch. I'm sorry ok? It just was kinda overwhelming to me, even if it was straightforward. Looking at it now it seems really simple. (Please note that that actually was an apology, not a sarcastic remark)

But it's irrelevant because google is working now.
