Okay so I just lost a small amount of work today after uncovering some bull!@#$ with Windows 10. Here's what happened:

Basically User Account Control hates SCX files. It asks for permission whenever you try to do anything with them. I disabled UAC in control panel yet the alerts still persisted.

After mapping for some time I noticed something: whenever I saved the map in SCMDraft my saves were not registering in-game!! Even though the save was going through fine with no errors, nothing was actually GETTING saved. What was weird was, I could close SCMDraft, open my map up again, and then all the changes were preserved, but the actual file itself had not been modified as per the 'date modified' column in Windows. I think SCMDraft itself must be saving it somehow.

Anyway, I had to actually go into regedit to fully disable UAC (setting a binary value from 1 to 0). Now, I open my map again, and all my edits were gone. BUT I was able to save again as normal, and this time it actually saved properly!

So, just something to be wary of Windows 10 users!! Disabling UAC in the control panel doesn't cut it - you have to actually do a registry edit in Windows 10 to actually turn it off! :flamer:

Guide for disabling UAC

Where is your SC install located? If it's in Program Files, your map was probably getting saved to a virtual directory, and it's probably still on your computer.

Everyone should just install games in C:\Games instead.

C:\Program Files (x86)\StarCraft

What's this about virtual directory?

Starting in Windows Vista (yes, that's how late to this party you are), Microsoft implemented a form of virtualisation into the Program Files directories.

This is to prevent viruses and malware from running rampant in that area of disk. Basically a program that is not running in administrative mode will be shown a virtual copy of the Program Files directories; they will be able to read files but writing to them will actually go to a different location in the disk.

If you then open up Windows Explorer and navigate to the Program Files directory, your files won't appear where you think they are, because they were written to the virtual directory and not the actual one, which is what Windows Explorer is showing you.

I disabled UAC a long time ago, but thanks for the heads up.

So disabling UAC disables virtualisation? Because everything works now that I've done that?

Yes; simply put: disabling your security settings disables security features.

Here we go again. Yet another thing to watch out for. When I updated my Windows 10, it actually undid my changes in the registry. Sneaky sneaky.

I'm very, very close to actually rolling back to 7 at this point. This operating system has zero fucking respect to user preferences.

I use windows 7 and I love the Virtual store, but Sometimes like other above its best to install games somewhere else. I just use "Blizzard\" in my installation files, makes finding those games a lot easier, but yeah I hard bad things about win8, and not many good things about Win10.

Personally I haven't had the pleasure to try either, I went from XP - Win7 years ago and haven't had any issues.

I use an SSD so my old games all go on secondary drives. Old games don't benefit significantly from faster load times.

Yeah, look, main reason I put my SC folder in C drive was because I was hoping to get faster compiling speeds in SCMDraft and faster find and replacing trigger portions in notepad file.

It is definitely faster, but since I got a new CPU at the same time I'm not sure which is actually the main contributing factor.

Anyway, I've disabled Windows Updates now, at my own peril. I've disabled UAC. I've disabled Cortana. I've disabled OneDrive. I've even installed the fucking Windows 7 calculator back because Win 10 calculator is seriously retarded.

I think I've finally butchered it into something I'm finally satisfied with. I just hope it stays that way...

Compiling is done in system memory. Where the program is stored is of no consequence. 100% from the speed up comes from the CPU.

:O as an IT guy I just flinched heavily at the first 2. Those are deadly sins that do nothing but sabotaging your own system. Any problem you're experiencing could be fixed with other methods. But hey, it's your decision to make. And you should enjoy that freedom as long as you can. Because in a few years Windows 10 will be patched to take all control from you and force updates and who knows what else.

"Will be patched" yeah good luck when I have updates disabled.

I don't know about deadly sins. I just know that I hate having to waste clicks on all those useless UAC prompts.
