I used to use Windows Live (aka the better MSN) constantly for a few years; now I do not use it at all.
I will use the Facebook messenger if someone messages me first, but I mostly just text on my cell phone.

Also, this 'Trillian' sounds like Yoono which I used briefly, and I thought it was pretty alright.

Still clinging to Trillian 3.1. Every update to the MSN or AIM protocols scares me. They updated for the last protocol change in both AIM and MSN, but I don't think know if they're going to keep it updated.

You can safely switch, Moose. I was skeptic about Astra too at first, but I didn't regret the upgrade. There's a few new features (e.g. file transfers actually work now), a fancy skin and a neat update to the chat window. And all that while still staying true to their roots. Lightweight/no bloat, high customizability and efficient usage.

Facebook chat is shit. It freezes my computer a lot when the window first pops up, and I always get the "your message could not be sent" error.

I basically hardly ever have reason to see my contact list at all. When I do, opening it up and dealing with the large window isn't at all an inconvenience.
Also, what is this "history"?

Yeah basically the only things you need a contact list for is checking who's online and initiating a conversation. Pretty common tasks for me, but apparently not for everyone.
