How do: Creating custom unit portraits?

Poopies. Just Poopies.

I'm doing this mod out of fun but a huge part of me wants to finish it regardless if I ever release it or not. I'm pretty sure someone else has done this but screw it, I'll still do it because its fun. Its basically an audio and a bit of visual cosmetic change. Swapped the audio from SCBW with sounds form SC2, basically. That's it.

Now my problem is the portraits. I have absolutely 0 knowledge on how I should go about this. I mean, I used to do it back then but that was in the early 2000's. Now, I'm poop.

Anyone can help me out here? Or perhaps, if you have time, do it for me? ;~;

I need the portraits from here turned into .smks:

Cartography Artisan

Obviously I don't know exactly how it's done :P , here are some reference points.

I'd most likely approach it using an MPQ editor (extra listfile for stardat ofc), find existing portrait files and replacing their contents.

You need to get smacker tools to compile the smk files ... I'm not sure where to get it anymore though. I don't think it's on RAD Game Tools' website anymore.

You'll need Windows XP to run this

she/her

You could run a vm to do it. I don't recall if compatability mode helps.

Compatibility mode doesn't work and I have little knowledge on how to run a virtual machine. ;~;

An artist's depiction of an Extended Unit Death

If you have the Home edition of Windows 7, getting XP virtualization is going to be a pain. But if you have Pro/Enterprise/Ultimate, just follow these instructions: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-windows-7

Edit: Here's a pretty good article that covers you if you have Home as well (and it has pictures!): http://www.tomshardware.com/news/windows-xp-mode-windows-7-win7,10213.html

Do I really have to do all those just to make three portraits? :c

Use this one (the official download doesn't exist, apparently) ... Smackerw.exe is the EXE you run.

Confirmed works in Win7.
