Lethal Illusion and I were discussing having a 1-Week Long Mapping contest this summer as one last mapping burnout before we both (probably) never touch the Starcraft Map Editor again. We've never really competed properly so we decided a contest where we devoted 1 whole week of our lives making rivaling maps should see us out nicely.

I want everyone who considers themselves at all talented to participate and show everyone what they can do.

Current slate: (any objections/suggestions say so)
Begin date: July 8th (Sunday)
Length: 1 Week
Theme: None?
Rules:
- No mods, no EUD Actions enabler
- EUD Conditions allowed
- No teams
- Some (minimal) recycling from old maps allowed (play fair)
- Everyone has to livestream themselves when they map (no audio required) or upload their map at the end of each day.

Create a fresh map on the start date and turn it in by the end of the last day. I should like it if people upload their maps in progress at the end of each day if they aren't livestreaming. Participants should also plan their time wisely so that they can get their map done by the time it's due.

Uhh do you guys want to talk to me sometime I was thinking of doing something similar: http://www.staredit.net/topic/13079/18/

Hmm OK sounds good. Anyone who is interested make yourself heard here, if there is a good amount of people, come 1st of June I will make a thread specifying my competition and its rules.

Here is the basics of what it will be:
* 3 - month RPG contest, no mods allowed. EUD actions not allowed. EUD conditions are fine. Multiplayer allowed. PvP is allowed but shouldn't really be the focus in a story-driven map.
* Remember its an RPG so it has to be story driven, you can't just have an arena map like Elementa, even though it could well be possible to make a story-driven arena map (think Mortal Kombat).
* Prizes will come in three tiers, 1st place can choose from any tier, 2nd can choose from second and third tier, and 3rd place chooses from third tier only. Tiers are according to price. You can suggest prizes and I will add them to the list.
* Tier 1 will be $300 max, Tier 2 will be 150ish dollars, Tier 3 will be under $100.
* Judging - is based on solely my subjective opinion. Let's not fool ourselves with all these templates and ratings you see in other comps, judging maps is a qualitative not quantitative experience.
* Things that will impress: innovation is always good, pushing the editor to its limits like creating a shooter type thing like RUSH, or screen tiles like Fallen Memories. Extended terrain is nice, and systems! Spell systems, item systems, character progression, boss battles dynamic monster spawning, day/night, shuttle/dropship menus, etc. In-depth storylines. Puzzles.
* You can use maps you have already made, however if you are doing this you must submit your old map as soon as you join the competition, because I would be contrasting that to your final submission and my judging would be focused primarily on the progress you made. This is mostly for people who started RPGs but never finished them to pick them up again and finish them off. Something like Tenebrous (by Vrael) for example would not win because so much work has already been done on it, whereas something like Wonder (by qpirateking) would.
* RPGs I liked, Rush, Deep Blue, Deep Six, Legacy of Haen, Arcane Arts, Spellsword, Death Knights 3, Cataclysm, Lost Souls (Cecil), Lost Souls (Ultimo), Wonder, Essence, Fallen Memories, Middle of the Ocean, So it Begins/Webs of Fire, Dwellers of the Depths, Autocracy, Tenebrous.

Remember, this competition is not really a battle between mappers, at least not in my eyes. That's not the reason I am hosting this. I know we have a large community of powerful mappers and I want to extract great RPGs from them. RPGs I can play and enjoy (solo or with friends) for years to come. That's why I am hosting this.

We've actually been discussing this for some time- I only now decided to start a discussion for it- the timing on this is coincidental.

From the looks of it, I'm looking for more of a short but explosive crash run (1 week as opposed to 3 months) and am more interested in competition. I'm not keen on drawing the process out for 3 months, but that's just me. I think the one week thing lends itself better to a more compact and rigid tracking and update process on all participants (especially for livestreaming).

Other major difference is I prefer maps being started from scratch so that maps don't have an advantage of being 2 years coming. But I suppose that's not important when your objective is to draw out maps out of people, rather than an actual contest.

Regardless, its good to have a thread to discuss what people want for a Summer Contest. We may end up just going with your idea and Lethal and I compete alone in the 1 week challenge, and just let people watch.

I'd rather see this than the 3 month contest. I probably wont have time to participate, but I'm really excited to see what you guys come up with.

Meh I don't care either way I'm flexible to what the community wants. The reasons for 3 months and maps don't need to be started for scratch rules is I think it will produce higher quality maps. But as you said, that is our main difference I want to get quality maps from mappers you want to have a contest for prestige.

I'd be willing to participate.

I'm moving sometime between June 13-15, but I should be able to devote an entire week shortly after.

This is great, and I fully support it.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to participate. I can't devote a week for mapping :(
(I can't even get Starforge working on my laptop...)

You should compete. It would be fun and challenging and I'd get to see what you're capable of.

Those are easy to get. Easier than participants.

What about people with no talent but plenty of knowledge? Is there room for us? :)

- Maps must start from scratch
I'm always confused by this rule. Is it just that the map must physically not exist before the competition begins? If I've created modular systems, am I not allowed to transfer them into the map I'm making? Can I completely design my project in non-map form before this starts?

I really wish I had the time for this. I'll probably participate anyway, because I'd have enough time to do something, and how could I pass up a chance to compete with you two?

Is this going to be completely free-range as far as themes and genres go?

Good points. Because of the time crunch, it's probably best if people can pull the spleen out of a former map and put it to use. Obviously you can take pieces of terrain out of other maps as well. Formulating and designing what you're going to do before hand is fine too.

As far as genre goes, I think the only way for maps to be comparable is for them all to be the same genre. If I end up hijacking Jack's contest it would have to be RPGs, and honestly, that's the best way to ensure the use of a wide range of skills.

But this is a thread to discuss what we want. Nothing is set in stone.

In other words, you can work on an existing map even before the contest starts. If this is the case, I would be all for it. I'm sure many of us have maps we have never finished for whatever reason, and allowing them to finish and submit one would make this contest more interesting imo.

I think the point is that you can take pieces from your existing maps (maybe a requirement would be that these maps must have been completed/released?) and reuse parts if your project is going to need them. It isn't the same as "Take an entire incomplete map as your base and begin working," though it's really up to the integrity of the competitor to follow the rule in the first place.

Oh_Man's contest will allow picking up an old project, though, so you may want to check that out.

No, not really. The idea is that you can reuse concepts or terrain from other maps, but you must create a brand new map from the point at which this contest starts. Obviously someone can cheat and copy triggers and all that, but that defeats the point of a week-long contest. In other words if you started a map years ago and never finished it but want to, during this week you can redo it pretty much from scratch.

EDIT:
Didn't see Roy's response. I probably should have refreshed this page before responding... :awesome:

Eh, for the week contest I may be able to participate. Exactly how much time I will have to put into the map is tentative, since I'm taking summer classes.

Ultraviolet -- Well, that's not true for all changes. Some changes will be seen immediately without having to create a new unit (I think changing a unit's weapon updates immediately), but I believe changes to unit properties are one of the ones that require units to be created after the EUD trigger has already run.
[11:16 pm]
Ultraviolet -- I believe you need to recreate Zeratul after the map has loaded because EUD edits don't take effect until after the first trigger cycle
