We've actually been discussing this for some time- I only now decided to start a discussion for it- the timing on this is coincidental.
From the looks of it, I'm looking for more of a short but explosive crash run (1 week as opposed to 3 months) and am more interested in competition. I'm not keen on drawing the process out for 3 months, but that's just me. I think the one week thing lends itself better to a more compact and rigid tracking and update process on all participants (especially for livestreaming). Other major difference is I prefer maps being started from scratch so that maps don't have an advantage of being 2 years coming. But I suppose that's not important when your objective is to draw out maps out of people, rather than an actual contest. Regardless, its good to have a thread to discuss what people want for a Summer Contest. We may end up just going with your idea and Lethal and I compete alone in the 1 week challenge, and just let people watch. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Meh I don't care either way I'm flexible to what the community wants. The reasons for 3 months and maps don't need to be started for scratch rules is I think it will produce higher quality maps. But as you said, that is our main difference I want to get quality maps from mappers you want to have a contest for prestige.

What about people with no talent but plenty of knowledge? Is there room for us?
I'm always confused by this rule. Is it just that the map must physically not exist before the competition begins? If I've created modular systems, am I not allowed to transfer them into the map I'm making? Can I completely design my project in non-map form before this starts? I really wish I had the time for this. I'll probably participate anyway, because I'd have enough time to do something, and how could I pass up a chance to compete with you two? Is this going to be completely free-range as far as themes and genres go? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Learn how to make EUDs: [EUD] A Mapmaker's Guide for Creating EPDs

Plenty.
- Maps must start from scratch I really wish I had the time for this. I'll probably participate anyway, because I'd have enough time to do something, and how could I pass up a chance to compete with you two? Is this going to be completely free-range as far as themes and genres go? As far as genre goes, I think the only way for maps to be comparable is for them all to be the same genre. If I end up hijacking Jack's contest it would have to be RPGs, and honestly, that's the best way to ensure the use of a wide range of skills. But this is a thread to discuss what we want. Nothing is set in stone. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Because of the time crunch, it's probably best if people can pull the spleen out of a former map and put it to use. Obviously you can take pieces of terrain out of other maps as well. Formulating and designing what you're going to do before hand is fine too. In other words, you can work on an existing map even before the contest starts. If this is the case, I would be all for it. I'm sure many of us have maps we have never finished for whatever reason, and allowing them to finish and submit one would make this contest more interesting imo. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I think the point is that you can take pieces from your existing maps (maybe a requirement would be that these maps must have been completed/released?) and reuse parts if your project is going to need them. It isn't the same as "Take an entire incomplete map as your base and begin working," though it's really up to the integrity of the competitor to follow the rule in the first place.
Oh_Man's contest will allow picking up an old project, though, so you may want to check that out. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Learn how to make EUDs: [EUD] A Mapmaker's Guide for Creating EPDs

Eh, for the week contest I may be able to participate. Exactly how much time I will have to put into the map is tentative, since I'm taking summer classes.
