Wow the whole time I'm watching this movie I'm just thinking in the back of my head "omgomgomg". This movie was incredible, like Dark Knight incredible. Already got 97% on RottenTomato, too.
It had a really good mix of comedy and action, I mean, the comedy was REALLY funny too. Like, I laughed harder in this movie than I have done in like 90% of comedies. Joss Whedon is a fuckin mastermind, but hey, we already knew that!

They did a really good job at having all the heroes play their parts too, no one felt redundant or unnecessary. I was really worried about how the Black Widow / Hawkeye characters would mesh with all the other superheroes, especially since everyone else (minus Captain America) can all fly. (OK, the Hulk can't really 'fly' but he can jump... really really high.) But it all gelled together brilliantly. And then there was Loki, OMG the best villain of all time. With a awesome arsenal of superpowers (his silver tongue was by far a joy to listen to).

Also the future films and sequels and further collaboration opportunities are incredible. (Does anyone know if the Amazing Spiderman upcoming film will be able to feature in Avengers 2? Or is there too much legal red tape there?)

If this isn't on your must watch list, make it so, right now!

There wouldn't be any legal issue with it, as far as I know, but Spiderman traditionally is not a member of the Avengers so based on that alone I doubt he'd make an appearance in any sequel (assuming they make one and not just keep doing sequels to the individual films).

Don't worry I have kept spoilers in collapse boxes.

Yer Devlin in the New Avengers Spiderman is in the Avengers as well as Wolverine. However I did some research it looks like both Wolverine and Spiderman are owned by different companies (they were bought before Marvel had their own studios). Therefore it is very unlikely to happen (calibration between studios, don't think that's ever been achieved lol).

This is the first time in a long time that such a high-calibre movie has come out LAST in America.
And it actually came out on the 25th here in Australia (ANZAC Day, oddly enough).

Meh, it wasn't all that and a box of condoms or anything. There wasn't that much comedy in it. I did like Loki calling Black Widow a quim though. I think cpt america should have told Stark that his father was a much better man than he was or something - missed opportunity really.

Much better than the captain america movie, which is the only other one I saw. That movie didn't really have a middle; it was all just a big montage.

What. Go watch the first Ironman.

Also, I heard that you should watch Thor before watching The Avengers for plot reasons. But I guess if you follow the comics or something that wouldn't matter.

Wolverine and Spiderman were never in the original Avengers. They removed Wasp and Ant-Man though. It's hard for Bruce Banner to fill Ant-Man's role.

Well you don't really NEED to watch Thor to understand what's going on. In fact you don't need to watch any of the other movies at all. It's all explained in film, sometimes with flashbacks.

But watching The Avengers without watching the other movies is dumb. Uhh, that's kind of the whole point! This is unprecedented in cinema history, where the title characters from multiple movies all come together in one movie.
By watching the other movies you get to know more about their character and the backstories, so when you watch The Avengers you appreciate it more.

You're doing yourself a disservice if you don't watch the other movies before watching Avengers. The only movie you really shouldn't bother to watch is probably "The Incredible Hulk". Since they couldn't get that actor to come back for Avengers they had to get a new actor, so they pretty much did the same thing to The Incredible Hulk as everyone did to The Hulk. Basically pretended it didn't happen, no references to it whatsoever. Whereas all the other avengers had flashbacks and and in-jokes etc.

The Hulk in Avengers is treated as like the big reveal, people know of his powers but no one has seen them, and there is a big build up leading to his first transformation. Currently at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Isn't that percentage just a ratio of good reviews vs bad ones? The average rating is 8.1/10, which puts it behind The Dark Knight.

The Dark Knight has 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Hey it hasn't even hit the states yet, more reviews will come in then no doubt, and the rating could go up and down we'll just have to wait and see.

But I don't really go off ratings that concretely I go off my own personal experiences. And I rate Avengers right up there with the Dark Knight.

So you're saying that 5 people giving a movie a 4/10 and 5 people giving it a 10/10 is the same as 5 people giving a movie a 0/10 and 5 people giving it a 6/10? They would both have the same 50% score. However, one would have a 7/10 average rating and one would have a 3/10 average rating.

You can't look at the ratio of good and bad alone: it matter how good and how bad it is. The Avengers so far has an 8.1/10 average rating among critics, whereas the Dark Knight has an 8.4/10 average rating. Stop advertising the "tomatometer" score and state the actual rating.

I've seen Iron Man and it was lame. It doesn't count anyway because at the time it was a stand-alone movie. It's not until Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America and The Incredible Hulk that they deliberately made the movies as feeders for The Avengers.

The only reason I saw Captain America is that I had free tickets and there was nothing else decent to go see at the time.

Haven't you seen the end of Iron Man? Nick Fury visits Stark at the end of it, meaning that it was also setting up for The Avengers.

Lots of movies get made with apparent cliffhanger endings or endings left open for sequels that never arrive because the movie didn't do well enough at the box office. Iron Man wouldn't have be written with the express intent of being an Avengers tie-in, simply just leaving the option open depending on how the box office went. It's entirely possible a squeal to Iron Man could have just had Nick Fury in it as a character but not the rest of the avengers.

Yeah, it's a shame they couldn't get back the old Hulk actor, Ed Norton knew how to play Bruce Banner. This new guy.. Ehh I think he could work on it.

And that's the main problem. You have Robert Downey Jr., Scarlet Johanssan, Samuel Jackson, Clark Gregg, and Chris Hemsworth paired up with actors that aren't on that level. Especially Mark Ruffalo.

---

There's supposed to be a Justice League in the works. And while Ryan Reynolds and Christian Bale could totally pull off batman and the green lantern, they don't have a superman, martian manhunter, wonder woman, flash, or hawk girl.

Sorry, you just can't pull off a movie of that caliber without people that know the characters.

---

Chris Evans? I though he did OKAY with Capt. America. I'm willing to give him a chance if only because he has experience with the character. I'll have to rewatch his movie to make a more definitive opinion, maybe my memory doesn't do him justice. I remember not liking the movie because of a dread awful plot.
