Don't discuss, I want the statistics of your initial thoughts.
Discuss away.
If the "Hide posts until you answer the poll" doesn't work, don't read down to the other questions.

Kthx.

We can't explain the universe, just describe it; and we don't know whether our theories are true, we just know they're not wrong. >Harald Lesch

Well there really is no discussion. Light as in photons are a natural phenomenon, not invented by man.
Man, however, invented devices (lamp) and methods (fire) that emit light.

Jun 24 2010, 5:08 pm TiKels Post #3

Azrael is arguing the opposite, that God invented light, or rather, that the majority (even though it isn't a majority: catholics) believe that light was "created by god" and the definition "Invent: to create or devise" makes "God invented light" true. So in 20 questions he put down for the question

Q: Was it invented?
A: Majority says yes.

God technically did invent light according to Catholicism. It's a vague and unnecessary reference but it's still accurate. And there are a majority of Catholics compared to any other religion or non-religious people.

Hello

I have no idea how you can even think about light being invented :bleh:

Exactly.
There are so many problems with that. I could sit and dissect all of the the misleading details. As far as I can see there are four or five.

It may be horribly misleading, but it's still technically correct Dx

But yeah I probably should have answered differently. It was pretty obvious people would get the wrong idea from that.

False.
According to the CIA factbook of 2005 (meh, a little old), Catholicism only has 1,117,759,185 members, while there are 1,282,780,149 Muslims.

Of course if you said "Christians" you would be right.

Christians, Catholics, tomato, tomahto.

Where do Muslims believe light originated from?

Jun 24 2010, 5:29 pm Demented Shaman Post #10

Also, even if you're going to use Christians as a majority of people, you'd still be wrong even if they are the largest religious group, because even as the largest religious group they still don't outnumber all the other religions combined.

None.

Basically the question is: Did God create the universe? There's already another thread for discussing the existence of God, so go there.

Also, Catholics make up the majority of Christians. There are between 1.5-2 billion Christians. There are over a billion Catholics. Catholics represent 50-66% of all Christians.

All catholics are christians but not all christians are catholics.

The thing is, you cannot just interchange words that have "similar" meanings and have it stay 100% true. The term "invent" has a different connotation than "create."

No, that's not the argument. The argument is about whether his response was appropriate and 100% accurate.

The definition of "invent" in some dictionaries is literally "to create".

It was not appropriate due to the very misleading and unnecessary nature of it, but it was 100% accurate.

God doesn't invent, he creates.
The difference is that god can create something out of nothing, while man can only invent things from other things that already exist (intellectual property, fantasies, etc. excluded). It's a completely different process. God's creation is not meant in a definition of invent.

You derive your idea that God created light because "Let there be light" was spoken. First of all, rule of thumb, don't take the bible literally. Whether you did or not is debatable and unimportant.

AFAIK Muslims do not have a passage that states "Let there be light." What they believe is unimportant ;o.

Yes, but that doesn't mean that it can be translated exactly. If I said "Thomas Edison invented the light bulb" and "Thomas Edison created the light bulb," it would work, but if I said "Tom and Jane created a baby" and "Tom and Jane invented a baby" it wouldn't make sense.

This is senseless. It's no different than saying "NUH UH I'M RIGHT." Your position right now is to wait for me to say that something is wrong, why it is wrong, and then you are to prove what I said wrong. See the above quote for an example.

[Azrael] But create and invent have each other in their definition. [/Azrael]

Yea, that's like saying pigs flying is 100% accurate in my dream world. Anything can be said to be accurate under a certain set of beliefs.

The point is, if you're going to consider your response accurate, then you're not suitable to be an answerer in our 20 questions game.
