Hey so uh, I need some headphones and I don't know the market all. Maybe someone here can help me?

I don't want to spend more than 100 dollars, probably best would be about 70.

Things I'd like to see:
  • Around the ear (or not)
  • Doesn't fall off when i walk with them on
  • Nice bass
  • Doesn't press against my ear awkwardly
  • All-in-all comfortable

Where can I go to figure this stuff out? I'd rather not pay for some brand name bullshit that gets marked up 600%.

Is it just me or does the headphone market seem dead between 20 and 60 dollars? There isn't much in the way of improvement in that range.

I'm also looking for headphones, but I'm cheaper than TiKels. I'd rather spend no more than 50 if someone can oblige. :) No noise cancellation, please.

Not at all. But first on noise cancelling: it's shit. The technology is to create sound so that it cancels out other sound, which doesn't work as well as it does when you add Sin(x + π) and Cos(x) together (which is the principle behind noise cancellation). Sounds are too complex and the technology is too primitive. Sound/noise isolation, on the other hand.

A few thoughts on brands:

Skullcandy, beats audio are shit. Like complete shit. Yeah they have a flashy brand and a crisp, sexy logo; but really, that's all it is. It's C or B rate materials grossly overpriced. Skullcandy, in my experience, has had a hit and a miss, I've found some of their products to be comfortable, and in particular, their in-ears to have superb bass quality. But that's the extent of it. Beats audio, on the other hand (by Dre hurr) are just way overpriced -- you would end up paying $300 for a pair of $70 quality headphones. It's like buying tylenol over generic acetaminophen. It does the same shit, but is grossly more expensive.

Rosewill, Zagg, et al. are a hit and a miss. They can be shit or be mildly decent. Sometimes you'll see one of their higher quality ones come down in price on some deal and will be the best thing in the price range, but this is something to really do your research about.

Sennheiser, Sony, Bose, and AKG tend to be top notch. Almost everything AKG or Sennheiser makes is absolutely superb, but still look at reviews just in case, a few products slip a bit in quality. Sony does make some really awesome stuff, but they also make some really mediocre stuff (but still not apple bad), but generally everything in their professional line is worth the change and then some. You'll really be getting your bang for your buck with these.

---

You have to know what you want. Dubstep means you're going to want a rocking bass (and thus bigger drivers). General listening will want something balanced. But if you're really into some hardcore music, then don't skimp on the highs or mid tones, which are more often than not left to be mediocre or subpar in the favor of bigger and better bass. A many people have grabbed some big heavy skullcandies only to be dismayed that vocals sound like they're being channeled through a tin can.

Comfort is paramount, especially for extended listening. Pay a lot of attention to how big your ears and head are and how the headphones will rest on your head because of it. In-ear can be extremely comfortable for extended listening, but don't always have quite the sound quality of over-ear. On-ear (circumaural) can be particularly risky, since it depends on you as a person and how pressing down on your ears may start to become a bother after ten or twelve hours of constant listening.

In-ear may be best for noise isolation, if the cord doesn't carry any sound when you bump it and it actually has rubber stoppers that fit into your ear (and it doesn't just rest up in your ear lobe like cheapie apple crap). They're very comfortable, in my experience, and very portable. Over-ear can be decently noise isolating, but it's not until you get into the higher price range that this really becomes something available.

---

But mostly, it all depends on how much you're willing to spend.

These are the best priced over-ear ones I see, but I'm sure with a bit of snooping around better ones could be found.

These are some very nice on-ear ones, I'd imagine them being comfortable.

None.

I can vouch for Sac that the Sennheiser HD 419's are awesome. They're incredibly comfortable; they cover my entire ears (I have big ears too) and I can wear them for hours. The sound quality is superb; listening to music through them after listening to it through computer speakers is such a colossal difference. They are a bit more bass-oriented, so if that's something you're not into, maybe look into some milder ones.

Weight is another issue for me. These look heavy, and my ears are smaller than yours. I would rather get on ear ones.

ᴄʜᴇᴇsᴇ ɪᴛ!

sennheiser and grado make awesome headphones. In general, grado has some of the best at almost all price ranges, but this whole audiophile thing is kind of bogus for me.

The monoprice $23 headphones have been analyzed and are damn good for the price. Their design looks just awesome, and while build quality is likely lacking, it's what I would expect from cheap headphones. They skimp on the stuff that's not that important.

I'm looking for new headphones now too because my old steelseries which I won in a SC2 tournament are starting to fray around the ear cups (leaving little black spots of material on my ears/in my sideburns which I have to keep brushing off after use.
Also my volume controller on the cable sat in a puddle of condensation from my cup and now when I turn the volume up and down it makes annoying noises.

But I want headphones WITHOUT a cable, the cable irritates me so much. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Link to my old headphone, I enjoyed all it had to offer minus the cable:

Hello

Sennheiser RS 180.
Cordless, decent range, very good quality as far as I can tell, batteries are strong as shit (really, you will likely never reach the end of power, just reload it when you go to bed (batteries are included)).
I have them for a year now and they still are like new, maybe except the "foam" (that stuff which touches your head), but it still is really comfortable and you can repurchase these things easily as they are exchangeable.

(btw, yours seems so be a headset. Keep in mind that headphones do not include a microphone.)

I don't know if you're still looking, but these have pretty good reviews and are at half-price right now.

Also for today, the Kinivo BTH220 is running at $20 (it's normally around $30 on Newegg/Amazon) if you're okay with Bluetooth. Dailysteals has a record of taking a long time to ship, though. I've ordered some Bluetooth headphones from there about a year ago and it took about a week, but I wasn't ordering during the holiday season.

I've always been cheap with headphones because I wear down the cord. The set I have right now (Rosewill RHTS-11004) has a removable male-to-male cord, which is by far my favorite feature in headphones now. (As for these headphones, the sound is okay but not great, and they get uncomfortable after maybe an hour of wearing. I only got them because I needed a new set and I could bundle it with my mouse.)

Does the cable irritate you more than batteries and having to charge things? I headed in the direction of wireless for a while, but recently I've made a swing back to wired because of that: wireless ones that take batteries suck because you have to keep buying new batteries or use rechargeable batteries that don't keep a charge for very long, and a built-in battery sucks because when it dies, you can no longer use that particular peripheral for a given duration (and a lot of devices won't allow you to charge and use at the same time).

Anyway, you can check out the Bluetooth ones above if you don't want to drop $200 on Devourer's suggestion.

Or if I've sold you on sticking with wired, I got my brother a Creative Fatal1ty headset and he loves it.

Well if I am going to wired I don't see why I just wouldn't buy my steelseries v2 again.

Kind of annoying I won this thing in a SC2 LAN, is there a way to get new foam parts?

You could ask the support staff on the Steelseries site, but it looks like they don't normally just sell parts.

I bought another pair of the Sony ones I use at work. They're comfortable enough. Besides I'm in full swing for Christmas gifts, no time to buy myself things. :bleh:
