Okay, so I gave this game ago

Didn't like it.

Let's focus on the good first.

The God theme, AWESOME. Makes me wonder why no other DOTA Clone has not had a coherent theme in them (besides Demigod)
Phoenix towers, what a brilliant Idea!
Very well calculated minion/tower to hero interactions. Pros will love it.
The third person camera does make melee'ing and shooting the basic attacks feel visceral. Although I'm not sure, because Bloodline Champion (also requiring skillshots for basic attacks) felt just as visceral.
Having items and ability upgrades fixed for newbies is a great idea

Now the bad things.
The map is, first of all, too big, or that the hero I had was too slow (Since I had Kali, the melee assault/assassin type, I felt my speed was a HUGE hindrance). The abilities of Kali were extremely dull, and her Ultimate was terrible and made me vulnerable. What the hay?

No idea what the abilities/items are. No clue on how anything works. No tooltips, no nothing.

The background is really bland, and while the spells/abilities are adequate, they are nowhere near exciting, well designed, or unique.

Which gets to my biggest problem. The biggest disappointment is that it really is just DOTA/LOL/HON in third person, with nothing truly new to offer.
Every trope in those "MOBA" (ugh) games are in here, including the Item Shops, Jungling, and imbalances. I feel like they missed a huge opportunity in not incorporating something completely new with this third person perspective.
Don't tell me that "always requiring a skill shot" is new, because it has been done before in Bloodline Champion, and while it is a great addition, it doesn't add much to the experience.
Now, some people say that, being in the Third person perspective, it is easier for people to gank, making it harder to predict enemy movements. But this is hamstringed by lazy design of the map (which is too big) and the heroes not being different at all.
Their abilities literally feel copy and pasted, just painted with their own God theme. (Just look at everyone's second spell, they are mostly forward AoE's which are there mostly to kill spawns)

If they really wanted to be unique, why don't I see any heroes like the Spy from TF2? I mean, I picked Kali, the most assassin like hero, and her abilities were REALLY lackluster, and nothing like what I imagined.
Kali rant (hero imbalance may or may not pertain to the game overall)

The point is, they did not explore from this perspective. They built the game to be a DOTA clone with a gimmick third person camera, and they succeeded that. They did a great job replicating how DOTA/LOL/HON feels, and any veteran players will feel right at home with this style of gameplay. But that's just it! It tried so hard to be a DOTA clone that it copied all of its bad tropes.
Such as the spells are all spammed once there're 4 or more heroes. Doesn't feel good to not know what killed you. To a complete newbie like me, everything feels like a complete mess and spam
Also, note that Kali's 2nd, 3rd, AND 4th spells are AoE attacks. Her L1 is a buff. So NONE.. I repeat, NONE of her abilities are skill shots. no wonder she felt unintersting.

I would recommend this game to anyone who plays DOTA/HON/LOL, but definitely NOT to anyone who's looking for a new, unique game.

I agree with most of this. The God theme and such are great. And the extreme downfall of this game is just that it is HON/DOTA/LOL in third person, nothing special. Completely agree. It had potential with the third person point of view, but it really didn't do anything special.

However I disagree with you on two things. First off, the map size isn't actually that big, I also thought that at first but I think after many games you realize it really isn't that big at all. The most annoying thing though is how weak towers are, how your phoenix is your inhibitor, (LOL term) and how weak your Minotaur is.

I also disagree with you completely on Kali. She is one of the fastest Gods in the game, (maybe you didn't upgrade your boots all the way?) and if you can get an enemy in a bad position it is like an instant kill for you. First off, the frozen hammer item is core on her (which also brings me to the point that recommended items are terrible for all Gods). She deals insane damage with her auto attack and her steroid boost, and her ultimate is mainly just for avoiding CC or chasing down enemy heroes. Her heal gives her amazing potential in the jungle. While she doesn't have any gap closing spells, you really need to take advantage of positioning and allies. All of her spells scale of physical damage, so she is pretty set damage wise. Ultimate + nuke is instant kill if you use them correctly. I will agree that she is completely bland. Whoever designed her didn't have any creativity in them, but all of these MOBA games need at least one hero who can spin2win (Garen/Juggernaught/Swiftblade/Ravener/Kali).

@Kali rebuttal
I suspected as much, as the game buys the items and upgrades the abilities for you when you are a newbie. If I had any clue what I'm doing, I'd put everything into speed and physical attack, which may change my outlook on Kali completely - which is why I collapsed the Kali rant

Now, I know I somewhat blasted the game but recently, this game has been sparking some controversy because of its God themes

Quote from The Escapist
The game isn't going over very well with Hindus, however, thanks to the presence of Hindu deities Kali, Vamana and Agni as playable characters. Rajan Zed, the head of the Universal Society of Hinduism, asked Hi-Rez in June to remove the Hindu characters from the game and then, when that went nowhere, called on QuakeCon to drop it from the lineup, which also went ignored. But he's keeping up the fight, and has now asked organizers to keep the game from being played or distributed at this weekend's PAX Prime.

"Goddess Kali and other Hindu deities were meant to be worshiped in temples and home shrines and not meant to be reduced to just a 'character' in a video game to be used in combat in the virtual battleground," he said. "Videogame makers should be more sensitive while handling faith related subjects, as these games left lasting impact on the minds of highly impressionable children, teens and other young people."
Source

Now we are no stranger to religious arguments, and I respect their concerns
but asking them to change and or get shut off from conventions is utterly stupid and useless.
To put it bluntly, the only "impressionable" people are those who actually think this is a problem

Then again, if Smite dares to put Jesus in there...... it'd be (sadly) another story.

Hindus are dumbasses. They make a big deal out of nothing and believe that their gods are above anything and can't be used for anything other than worship. They should be happy that their religion is getting some sort of recognition. I remember a while back when I went to one of the temples they were passing around a petition for public schools to include more about Hinduism in their textbooks. Yep, instead of discussing religion, they were passing around bullshit papers demanding that more people care about their religion. And I come from a family of Hindus, so as much as you all love flaming me, don't accuse me of being a racist jackass.

You know what guys?

We should totally come up with a Jesus hero for SMITE.

His L1 can be...
Divine hand - target enemy gets damaged and will be damaged more if it attacks Jesus. Target ally gets healed.

L2 - Holy Light - Light surrounds Jesus, strengtening/weakening allies/enemies
Or maybe
L2 - Holy Spirit - Jesus phases into spirit form and can move around in a faster speed. It can activate a "suicide" or "return to form" which deals AoE damage :D, and changes it back to human form.. Or make him a spirit form that makes him untouchable and give him a faster speed so he can run away and stuff.

L3 - Crucify - giant cross appears from beneath the ground and deals heavy AoE damage in target area

His ultimate can be Resurrection - makes him feign death and arise, healing and dealing damage to his slayer

fuck, I'd play this game just to see the words "Jesus has been Slain"
And it works, since heroes have infinite lives anyway.

I hate how even I can't figure out good, unique abilities other than healing/support abilities for Jesus. The image of "good" and "pure" is so pervasive with Jesus' image that I can't think of anything

I'm actually curious why the Hindus didn't argue the sexualization gambit with the gods... THAT is a bigger concern if u ask me.

Just looked up the spells for Vamana, the only god that resembles buddhism

All his spells (Except ultimate) uses his umbrella. That is so lame.
There are myriads of "Monk" classes that they could've borrowed from. But nope, make way for the ability "Umbrellarang".
That ability name is cringe-worthy....

Also..
Vamana Gangum Style!!
The hindus may have a point here - only that the game may show disrespect.

From another perspective, the game works to increase awareness and possibly provide tangential learning opportunities. As long as the developers don't not put any falseness and respect the religious characters, the game works to help raise awareness, rather than harm their precious religion.

They do. I can't be bothered to dig up a source right now, but I know I've read about that being actually the biggest concern.

This counter argument has been brought forth by the developers, but considering the disrespectful and sexist portrayal of their gods they can't appreciate that. And I think they actually did put falseness into the characters (flavor text I think) but are working with the buddhist representatives to at least rectify that issue. (At least that's what I remember from when I looked into it a few weeks ago.)

Sounds like invisible + speed bonus for a short duration. Like Clinkz's Wind Walk from DotA.

It could be like Skeleton King's passive ultimate from DotA that resurrects him when he dies automatically if it's not on cooldown.

DotA is the only MOBA I've played...

It's an interesting exercise of free speech, and I'd be curious to see how it flies (particularly in the U.S.). I imagine the Christian (and potentially Muslim) community would be as outraged as the Hindu community is now, though they'd likely have more influence.

Back* from the grave

Following the general theme SMITE seems to love: one damage-, one mobility-, and one heal-orientated spell...

Jesus's auto-attack: nails thrown from his wrists
Passive: Love Thy Neighbor - Enemies damaging Jesus take 5% increased damage for 3 seconds.
1: Thorn Crown - Jesus throws his thorn crown onto a small area, damaging and slowing all targets in the area.
2: Holy Ghost - Jesus transforms himself into a spirit for 5 seconds, gaining 10% movespeed, immunity to damage (not stuns, silences, etc.), and becomes unable to attack. Can be cancelled early or after 3 days.
3: Eye for an Eye - Jesus meditates for 3 seconds, removing all of his protections, but absorbing 15% of damage dealt to him. The absorbed damage is returned to his attacker at the end of his meditation, and Jesus heals himself for the damage dealt.
4: Cross to Bear - Jesus swings his cross in a small radius, dealing immense damage to the nearest God and all minions in the area. Damage is increased by 5% for each God in the area.

Yes, I have the mental image of Jesus carrying the cross with the crown as the in-game character, kinda like:

Only instead of being covered in blood he's got white robes n shit. Oh and he's carrying the cross be the large portion, instead of dragging it by one of the arms.

Aug 31 2012, 7:16 pm UnholyUrine Post #49

Other than Eye for an Eye, I like the names.

Now, Love Thy Neighbor is a perfectly legitimate DOTA'esque passive... but come ON that's such a boring ability.
how about Jesus heals nearby allied units 2% of their max health every second. Also, Jesus' healing ability will also heal for 10% of whatever the healing effect is on Jesus for nearby allied units.

Thorn Crown is, i guess, the only way a "skill-shot" orientated spell would work.. Divine Hand is more of a top-down, target unit kinda ability.
How about this.
The Thorn Crown is thrown in an arc like a boomerang. However, the first enemy unit it intercepts, it latches onto it and slows it down and deal Damage over a duration of about 3 seconds.

Holy Ghost/Spirit - I think, in terms of the general theme of SMITE, his L2 deals damage to spawns. So, in that case, the Holy Spirit, when it deactivates, should deal AoE damage that deals bonus to spawn minions.
Good combo with Thorn Crown, as it clears the way for the player to aim at the enemy heroes (somewhat)

Cross to Bear/Crucify should be L3, as Resurrect is a better Ultimate XD.
It'd be cool if it acted like the Ice Wall for the Ice God, that it Unearths itself from the ground..
Imagine a cross that has tons of nails on it, and anybody caught on the initial AoE will be latched onto the cross and immobilized..
That's a rather ballsy image but MAN that'd be awesome.
Players can actual Crucify enemy heroes? And they're Gods?!

Omg, TS2 needs Jesus as a hero

Oh well... it was expected

From their heroes' abilities, I can already tell they're not one to take risks..
but honestly, what game company would put Christianity in there? It's just too notorious

And Jesus here is just a fun thought experiment XD
