Its people! Trolling is made of people!
Yes, a lack of resources in a world of "
holy shit, random monsters!" is always a scary aspect in horror gaming.
It makes the player feel powerless in threatening situations.
Tackle that on with the element of "
I just cannot win" is always a interesting approach as well.
Why should the problem be resolved with a bullet or blunt object? Why not take a page out of Return of the Living Dead, and have the enemy continue to hunt you down even after you blew off their legs/arms/head. It is pretty terrifying seeing a corpse, or whatever, drag itself towards you in an effort to kill you especially if you did enter a sort of "safety zone/feeling" for killing it earlier. Then, out of nowhere, it starts moving again to still come and get you.
Also, before I forget,
this game does a great job at the whole "
jump out at you" shockers.

I'm more into psychological thrillers than into horror. I don't like gratuitous gore and blood when its unnecessary. Also, I don't really like the whole idea behind horror films which amounts to "the cheerleader always dies," and "don't wander out alone." The type of flicks that get to me are when I'm laying awake at night and fridge logic kicks in. You know, that missing piece that makes everything seem a little worse. And I can't stand screaming. I really can't. I don't know why it makes me react, but I can't even be in the same room as it.
So fridge logic is the idea that you're walking to the fridge in the middle of the night and something clicks. I know this isn't horror related - but there's a ton of Pokemon related ones. For example. In Gold and Silver you finish Johto and then go back to Kanto. When you go back to Kanto, you find places like the bike shop/department store/radio tower (I think?) pretty much shut down due to lack of business. So the "an economy is you" trope just became a bit freakier - because you were born, everything moved to Johto. Meanwhile the workers from Kanto were laid off, causing unemployment to run rampant in Kanto. And its all your fault. You had to be born in Johto.
There is a creepy pasta for Pokemon where it explains that your rival has a pokemon - you beat your rival, your rival runs to the pokecenter - and can't get there. The next time you see your rival, he's in the pokemon graveyard talking about death. In effect, because you had to accept his challenge, you killed his pokemon. You sick fuck.
Anyways I know those are lame examples. I do enjoy thrillers though. Its just that there aren't a lot of good ones more recently, so I'm out of the loop. I think the last horror flick I saw was the Ring. that was four years ago? I don't remember.
EDIT: Will reminded me. Wasn't there a psycho thriller game that would randomly shut off on you? That would scare the crap out of me too.
Yeah, there was a game where the screen would go blank and the sound cut out, so you'd be all mad that the tv had broken or the game had frozen. You get up close to the screen, fiddling with the controls and BAM - you get a big scare.

Hmmm I wonder if mobile grids using unit explosions in the shape of a screaming face over null terrain would be effective?
Also do you think having a timed sequence something that would detract or add to horror? I mean having to pursue through an area quickly, forcing the player to move through horrifying environments fast where they might otherwise take their time?
There was a fairly popular map by Bolt_Head which was horror themed and successful. Unfortunately I can't remember what it was called. Haunted something or other.

House on Haunted Hill I believe. A classic. It scared the shit out of me as a kid.

House of the Haunted I think? I remember playing it...

Link? Can't find the damn thing.
Moose will almost certainly have it on his hard drive somewhere. He had some lame map of mine from 2004-5 so he must have Bolt's maps.

Are there maps that just get lost? I always thought there were like massive databases somewhere. Seriously, Moose is the only one that has this map??
He might not have it necessarily. Lots of maps got lost during one of the various SEN dramas, including mine which were on the old database. Bolt himself might have them, you never know.

I'm sure that there are a great many maps that are lost. For one, there have been plenty of database resets at SEN and elsewhere, but even discounting that, there are also many, many maps-- the majority, even-- that are made without any connection to any database-possessing website community, which almost always become "lost" if they do not achieve popularity.

While I haven't ever seen a movie like this, IMO the best horror
film would have to be one that is full of the cheap scares to the point where every zoom in on a person's face has something moving in the background with some freaky music there too.
I came across this revelation when I watched "An American Haunting" which is certifiably the worst movie I've ever seen. The only scary parts were the cheap scares, and there were only 3 of them. The rest of the movie I was laughing.
As far as games go, I've never been much of a fan since you're much more immersed, and you can't complete it in just a few hours. Rather you have to stop and start again, removing some of the horror aspect, which is disappointing.
"Parliamentary inquiry, Mr. Chairman - do we have to call the Gentleman a gentleman if he's not one?"
I was thinking of Regenerators as well. Horrible things - I'll never forget the first time I shot the leg off one and it fell, then bounded forward as the leg grew back, and tore my neck to pieces.
I think they have like 6 plagas inside them which you need to kill. The Iron Maidens were pretty bad as well because they could pull you onto their spikes, plus there's that "dead" spiky person lying in a pile of trash at some point, and I
knew it would get up and turn into an Iron Maiden at some point. I was afraid to turn my back on it.

I've noticed games take several methods to combat this. Namely, taking away the ability to save, and instead relegating saves to certain checkpoints. This forces you to go forward to save or lose progress. I often found myself progressing much further then I would have usually because of this method. Getting to the save zone, walking forward a little bit to the next area to check it out before 'promising' myself I will quit, but then keep going further, until I don't want to lose my progress anymore so I go on to the next chapter. Rinse/repeat.
In addition to this method the game also takes away anything that would pause the game. IE. reading journals, checking your quest log, going through the inventory, etc. all happening while you could potentially be attacked at any moment.
In fact, in extreme cases I've heard of games where they take away the ability to pause altogether. The only way to quit the game is at the save points! (Or ALT+F4.)
