Does anyone know how i could do this? heres the concept i have so far. take a song and use beacons like the buttons on the controller. have a vulture(or something else fast) to use on thew beacons as the button pusher. have another set of the beacons and have civs walk from somewhere down onto the beacon(like the notes coming down the screen. then if the vultures on the same beacon color as the civ gets there the person gets the point. having multiple people going through a song most points wins. what do you guys think of this idea? would it work? i know id have to simplify the song to make it possible but i think itd be entertaining and i could make it for different songs if it takes off. also is there a good map editor to do it with?

An artist's depiction of an Extended Unit Death
http://www.staredit.net/topic/2345/0/sdery23 made a Guitar Hero map that uses a Terran Starport and the five units it can create as its frets. You then have 5 corresponding columns that have units move down it. When the unit walks over the creep terrain its time for you to make the unit to kill it, hence makes the guitar sound. If it walks to to the other side of the creep terrain then it gets removed by a trigger and you loose one life. The game is extremely hard. The timing is offset for the units that are walking down their paths. I'm not at all saying it can't be properly done, just that the one he made wasn't "Map of the year" type of material. It was a cool idea though.
You'll find a bunch of good information in that thread. I would recommend building units vs moving units, because it's faster. You could use a Dropship system, but that would be more difficult to play.
You might also consider
EUDs if you know about them. Maybe you could figure out a cool system with them. You could make the game single player and use
key detection, for example. Or maybe some integrated unit selection system where you make the player hotkey a bunch of combinations so you can do multiple notes at the same time.
Really, though, SC is not meant for these kinds of maps. It takes forever to download a map with a full song in it, and there aren't any real functional simultaneous conditions that are as easy to operate for the player.
I'd recommend a reaver system - have a bunch of reavers lined up (however many keys there will be), hotkey each one, and detect when scarabs are built (I'm assuming you would know how to trigger this). The player would just have to press the hotkeys up top and click the Build Scarab button (or press the appropriate hotkey). Arguably, this is easier than remembering however many different unit build hotkeys.

I would use a movement-detection system. 5 units, positioned where the "notes" pass over. You hotkey each one (1,2,3,4,5). Then when a note is going overhead, you select the unit with the numbered hotkey and right click anywhere. You use an inverted location to detect the instant it moves and move it back. In this way, you could have one hand positioned over the numbers, the other hand ready to right-click as soon as the note passes by, much like using the frets and strumming.

EUDs would be my suggestion either detecting "Key Pressed" or "Unit Selected". If you do decide to use EUDs I think detecting "Unit Selected" would be better. On another note I think making this kind of map would be insanely annoying, only playing 1 song would suck so you would probably want more than 1 song so you would have to choose either, multiple songs with no sound or multiple songs with a huge file size and what about difficulty? I agree with Roy, this kind of game really isn't meant for SC. Good Luck (You'll need it).

If only they would let you use midi files
I would use EUD selection system and make the player hotkey an immobile unit.

Guitar Hero + Piano + Starcraft = This map
I know this isn't a very current topic but just in case anyone is still interested.
