Hello guys. I forgot all about starcraft and just got back. What kind of music file does Scm draft 2 accept to put into the map?
And I have this music saved as mp3. Anyone recommend a certain converter? Thanks people.

None.

Starcraft plays wav files. You can open mp3 files in a program like Audacity and then export it as a wav.

That would definitely take a while. If it's more than like 1 or 2 mbs (the map size), the download will probably take over five minutes or something. You can compress the wav to make the file size smaller, and then compress the map using TinyMap or something to make the map size smaller. That might help a bit.

Download speeds on Bnet (in my experience) vary between around 10kb/s to 30kb/s (I don't know why it's so slow), depending on who you're downloading the map from and how far away you are from them. This means you can download a 200kb map in mere seconds, but it takes around 1.5 minutes for a 1mb map. A whole song at a reasonable bitrate will yield a map probably around 6mb in size, which would be so slow that anyone joining the lobby would just leave and find another game to play. If it's a short song and you reduce the quality to shit, you can cut it down to around 2mb in size, which will be a tolerable download if you're lucky.

Damn D: if I get people to download it on here do they need to put it into their downloads folder and have the same name?

None.

The file name has to match, but it only has to be in their Maps folder, not their downloads folder specifically.

By the way, VLC media player can convert mp3's to wavs as well if you have it.

Audacity is pretty much the standard for free conversion. The Wav files need to be 16 bit wav (8 bit wavs are uncompressed) and would be smallest at 8kHz or 11kHz without sacrificing all the quality in the audio. 10 seconds at 11 kHz and 16 bit will make a file 200 kB large. When compressed it will likely go down to less than 100 kB. To figure out the size of a wav file, multiply the numbers together (10*11k*16) and you'll have the total number of bits in a song (not bytes). Wavs are compressed to roughly half their size, usually more using the poor mpq compression in starcraft.

You can cut the file size in half by using mono instead of stereo(can be donewith Audacity)
