(The snob comment was in jest with the other guys). I realize that may not translate well.

I read your comment as "You called me a snob, so I'm suggesting maybe I won't help you as a consequence" :awesome:

But yeah, there isn't a rivalry, if for no other reason the fact that the two sites focus on different aspects of mapping.

Quote from Roy
Just to let you know, you don't need to end every post with a "Kind regards" message; we're much more informal than that. (There's also something in the SEN rules against ending all your posts with the same thing.)

He doesn't have to, but he should be allowed to :P

The rule about that sounds just vague enough to allow for a case-by-case determination. I wouldn't consider "Kind regards" to be garbage, myself :kame:

Don't do it, it's a trap!

The rule basically exists because that's the point of having and using the signature space. If we allowed what is essentially a signature added to the end of every post (as in "Kind regards"), people could just do that instead of buying or utilizing the signature item. Not to mention it pads the post, which is also against the rules.

Oh yeah, I forgot you have to purchase a signature :P

And the fact you get minerals for adding more to your post in most forums.

Damn you and your reasons DevliN :massimo:

A signature, as displayed by most users here, is meant for nothing more than a name in image form, or a list of maps. There shouldn't be any problem with ending your posts like you would a letter/email. And how does it 'pad' the post? Are those extra 10 letters going to give him an undeserved two extra minerals if he posts in a Starcraft-related section?

Or you could put that ending in your signature instead of an image or list of maps. And yes. Especially if every single post is padded in a mineral-producing section.

The line between your post and signature is ugly.

Why the fuck is that against the rules? You could argue that having a signature is like posting the same thing over and over again
Here's the rule, because you clearly didn't read it and just overreacted to what I said:
Quote from The Rules
Adding Garbage to Posts
  • Please do not add extra garbage or smilies to post. Adding five smilies to the end of your post makes you look immature and unprofessional. It also subtly hints to other users that SEN might not be the website for you.
  • If you wish something to end every post, please use your signature, available in the settings area.

And:
Quote from name:Dem0nS1ayer
I don't want to see that random shit in every post.
Thank you for leading me to one of the main purposes of the rule: you have the option to hide signatures/avatars in the Forum Settings, so you don't have to see "that random shit"; if someone puts their signature stuff at the end of each post, however, you have no option to hide it. (Those settings have been a figurative lifesaver for me on this slow connection, by the way.)

I don't mean to insult your intelligence, Demon, but that argument you presented was the worst I've seen in a long while (I almost disregarded it as mindless trolling). I know you're into the whole "hate the administration" fad, but don't use that as an excuse to sound foolish; if something with the site's administration sounds wrong to you, spend some time to actually research and think about why it exists before you voice your concern. Also, don't hijack someone else's introduction thread to voice your concerns.

Quote from Azrael

Err... Read the rules, Demon. In fact, what I quoted above even mentions this.

Sorry for derailing a rather happy introduction thread with my negative comments. It's not that I hate every mod here, but the fact that you guys (I don't mean to personally attack you by the way) always have to point out little things like this irks me. It's not a big deal, yet for some reason, you have to potentially turn away new members by saying stuff like, "That's against the rules. Don't do it again. Oh, by the way, have fun here at SEN!" How is adding a little closing to each post considered "garbage"? I'm not accusing this site to be strict as hell; you guys do it well enough on your own. And the fact that you try to so hard to get people to "contribute" by forcing them to strip themselves of any sort of personality until they have enough minerals to buy a feature that is given for free on almost every other forum on the internet is almost embarrassing. I'm pretty sure I could add tons of useless fluff into my posts that would get me far more minerals than a simple ending phrase would. I mean, seriously, how many minerals will an extra two words get you? And why's it such a big deal? Hardly anybody even cares about minerals here, and it's not like we all go around finding ways to manipulate the system to give us more. It's a website. I'm not going to go crazy over this "currency." And I really don't think you guys should either.

Obviously, I'm blowing this out of proportion, but it really bugs me that every time you guys make some point about a rule on SEN that would be considered ridiculous on any other website and a member speaks out against it, you all come down on that person like a pack of hounds smelling fresh meat. I'm not trying to incite an argument, but Devlin's half-trollish posts and your over-seriousness of the whole thing isn't even necessary.

Apr 7 2012, 6:15 am Tharuk Zhal Omaenha Post #32

Mind you, there is a big difference between adverstising for yourself and politely addressing others. Most people use signature space for doing the former. Also, if being polite (at the price of adding more words) makes a user guity of padding his posts, then using verbose language (like many users on this forum) should as well. Let's not be anal about this...

Pointing out things that break the rules irks you? How else should we go about it? If you read Roy's original post about the "Kind regards" thing, he was actually being pretty nice about it, giving DerGreif a simple heads up. It seems like "Why the fuck is that against the rules?" is what started the downward spiral in this topic. :/

Quote from name:Dem0nS1ayer

I'm pretty sure that wouldn't have turned away a new member. If anything, the outburst that followed would, unfortunately.

Quote from name:Dem0nS1ayer

I don't think having a signature has anything to do with personality. Your signature tells me nothing about your personality, but your posts on the forums and in the Shoutbox do, on the other hand. What can you tell about my personality from my signature?

Quote from name:Dem0nS1ayer
I'm pretty sure I could add tons of useless fluff into my posts that would get me far more minerals than a simple ending phrase would.[/quote[
Which is also against the rules. People have done that, and have been punished for it.

[quote=name:Dem0nS1ayer]it really bugs me that every time you guys make some point about a rule on SEN that would be considered ridiculous on any other website and a member speaks out against it, you all come down on that person like a pack of hounds smelling fresh meat.
As far as I can tell, Roy and I are the only staff members speaking up about this. Not to mention more people spoke up against the rule than for it. So I'm not sure who "you all" are.

Quote from name:Dem0nS1ayer
but Devlin's half-trollish posts
I don't see any trolling in any of my posts in this thread. "Because we said so." was actually a serious response. We don't have to justify the rules, we just enforce them. That is explained in SEN's ToS. "Or you could put that ending in your signature instead of an image or list of maps. And yes. Especially if every single post is padded in a mineral-producing section." was also a real response. The point of signatures wasn't always self-promotion. It is called a "signature" for a reason. "Oh, okay." is the only post that could be considered trolling, but it was in response to what I assume was TiKels trolling, so whatever. :awesome: "Now it just looks like you're trying too hard." was a serious response as well. Like Roy, I thought your posts were mindless trolling after a while. I guess not.

This really is blown out of proportion. We haven't fined DerGreif minerals or punished him in any way. Roy gave him a simple "by the way" and that was it. Any member can be polite without adding something like "Kind regards" to the end of every post. For the record, this isn't the first time someone has been told about the rule against adding something like this to the end of every post. This just seems to be the first time anyone other than the staff has noticed. We have also received complaints about people adding verbose language to posts to pad them, and have acted on those complaints. The best way to inform us of any such posts is to report them.

Quote from Sacrieur
They only enforce the rules when it makes sense, I haven't seen anyone enforce rules just because someone is breaking the rules.
This sums it up pretty well, most of the time. A majority of our rule enforcement for minor rule violations stem from reports of posts where members believe someone is breaking a rule.

Show them your butt, and when you do, slap it so it creates a sound akin to a chorus of screaming spider monkeys flogging a chime with cacti. Only then can you find your destiny at the tip of the shaft.

Oh, I am really sorry about breaking these rules. I honest to God did not suspect, that there were such rules against a flowery phrase at the end of the post. In the future I will use the signature for such a purpose. Please, do not argue about that.
