I'm surprised there isn't a topic for this already.

Story:
In a parallel universe where the space race never ended, space travel was gaining popularity amongst corporations and rich individuals.

In 1988, a brand new deep sleep cell was released, compatible with all popular 16 bit computers. Unfortunately, it used big endian, whereas the DCPU-16 specifications called for little endian. This led to a severe bug in the included drivers, causing a requested sleep of 0x0000 0000 0000 0001 years to last for 0x0001 0000 0000 0000 years.

It's now the year 281 474 976 712 644 AD, and the first lost people are starting to wake up to a universe on the brink of extinction, with all remote galaxies forever lost to red shift, star formation long since ended, and massive black holes dominating the galaxy.

What it is:
It's a first person space Game being created by Notch (creator of Minecraft). From what I can tell, each person is given a spaceship with (up to?) 3 100 KHz CPUs (which are functionally like any other computer), that run even when you're logged off by the server. That means you'll be able to create your own OS, programs, targeting software or games on the in-ship computer.

It's very early on in production so it isn't playable and much of the intended features will change.

The Generator and the Computer
Each ship has a generator capable of producing a fixed wattage, and everything you connect to it drains wattage. A cloaking field, for example, might require almost all the power from the generator, forcing you to turn off all computers and dim all lights in order to successfully cloak.

The computer in the game is a fully functioning emulated 16 bit CPU that can be used to control your entire ship, or just to play games on while waiting for a large mining operation to finish.

Currently Planned features:
- Lots of engineering.
- Fully working computer system.
- Space battles against the AI or other players.
- Abandoned ships full of loot.
- Duct tape
- Seamlessly landing on planets.
- Advanced economy system.
- Random encounters.
- Mining, trading, and looting.
- Single and multi player connected via the multiverse.

Find Me On Discord (Brood War UMS Community & Staredit Network)

Wonder how many active stars still exist in this universe. Also everything would be so far a part from everything else, I wonder what sort of transport is used?

Very ambitious, I wonder if it will see the light of day.

OVERWATCH STATUS GO

Haha awesome. I was watching his stream when he first started coding this and had no idea what the end result was. Looks neat.

Doesn't seem like it will be better than EVE.

If it's done properly, I think it could be. Really depends on the design choices that end up being made.

Once Notch releases the updated DCPU-16 specs I'll begin working on my own operating system (naming it ProtOS).

I wouldn't fancy coding absolutely everything in the equivalent of Assembly right off the bat, though. Might want to wait until people post code to add a few layers of abstraction, first.

It's not a game, it's a screen saver.

Looks like instead of an MMO he's doing something more akin to Guild Wars. While I'm not a fan of MMOs, it's probably the only way I could get into 0x10c. We'll see.

Notch's post on twitter: "These guys have been working on a game similar to 0x10c. I was not aware of them. Play both? :D http://www.elliptic-games.com/index.shtml"

Looks more promising so far :awesome:

Ego-driven developers tend to make clumsy contraptions of their games. I should know.

It doesn't look like he's planned much specifically for multiplayer coding, which is kinda a big deal. Among other various observations.
