Still Napping

I am currently employed at a nearby gas station for minimum wage (7.25 an hour) for near full time (38 hours a week, so they don't have to give me benefits). And while I appreciate having a paycheck every two weeks, I do not particularly enjoy my job, which provides service to many a lowlife and scum that live in my area. While most are polite and nice people, I find the intellectual level of the place to be sub-par.

I have job experience in cleaning, for which I was paid 5.15 an hour (minimum wage at the time). And while I despised said job, it taught me excellent cleaning habits and proper procedures. It was not until a few years later that I was employed as a canvassing agent for a stellar 12/hour. This generated some much needed people skills in my portfolio.

Having moved someplace else, I now partake in said bottom rung job. I have little desire to continue being employed until my joining of the military (approx. one year). Wat do?

I've considered becoming a mySQL developer, which would run at 3.5k for education and certification.

Any ideas people?

Not sure but since we're both in the same boat, let me know if you find a way out. :P

Back* from the grave

Get hit by some drunk guy that wants gas and break a bone. You could even get a friend. Medical leave.

What branch of the military are you planning on joining?
They might not like you if they find out how you feel about capitalism :massimo:

I'd still find some crappy retail/food service job until you reach the military, or else you'll just sit around and bitch about never having any money. :P Do something easy and part time, like grocery store clerk, look on campus for work study, or do something.

Or you could answer questions on ChaCha :awesome: it doesn't pay great but you work whenever you want to, and usually its internet illiterate people asking you to find the hours or phone number for the closest Denny's.

The only way to "beat" capitalism is to abuse welfare programs, I guess since you're a student you could take out student loans to your heart's content, because I doubt you'd qualify for SNAP if your parents claim you as a dependent. :P

OVERWATCH STATUS GO

I know a bunch of people who had nothing when they joined the military and came back to their exact same situations, so you should at least know that the military probably wont change anything for you, job-wise, unless you make a career of it.

What do you actually want to do as a career? I get that you want to find a job that pays well, but regardless of that, what would you want to do if you could? Also I realize we're in an economic crapstorm right now, but how hard would you say you've looked for a new job (even like crappy odd-jobs through something like Craigslist)?

Marines or Air Force.

Due to the confusion circling my interest in the military, allow me to elaborate.

I will enter the military under through ROTC. This means I will go to college, with tuition paid, and come out as a second lieutenant. How long I will stay in the military from that point on is uncertain, I may join special forces.

After I will, with little doubt, pursue a doctorate.

Part time would be nice, since full time is just so draining. But I need a car then a new computer, then perhaps part time will be a good option.

I'm not quite sure. As a polymath, I lack any sort of stellar specialization that makes employers happy. I could look harder, I was pretty desperate before without transportation, but that is probably going to change soon.

I'd like a job where I get to sit down and think, which is hard to find without some sort of super education degree.

No, we're both gas pumpers JaFF. But actually I was considering the Air Force for some time. I like a lot of things about the military, but it just isn't for me.

Education wise what did you take in collage/university; if you didn't take any kind of education except for high school your pretty much screwed
Collapse Box

If your tight on cash some military programs offers to pay for your education. But this usually requires you have a 2 year stay in the army reserves. Before joining the military ask what they can give in training and education... Usually the jobs you do help you in training and is good for a resume; e.g. sonar technician requires you to train in some acoustics. But most of the time you don't get much out of it unless you planned ahead for a job that would look good on your resume so i don't recommend you join the army unless you do tons of research.

Oh, so you're just bitching. I'm just saying it because I used to do the same thing. If you're on campus you don't need a car (thought you were in school?) to do work study. A bike will cost you maybe $100 for a half decent one, less if you're willing to buy a bad one. "need a new computer" is a misnomer. You have a computer, you are online. Therefore you can do ChaCha.

I'm not in school.

I'd like to devote more time independent education, however. Hence, *beating* capitalism. Unfortunately my family has informed me they are struggling, so I probably will need to work full time.

In Capitalist America... :awesome:

Really though, work with the system, not against it. Otherwise you will fail spectacularly and have nothing to show for your life.

Did you not read the OP? I have a job and do work full time. It would help me and my family if I could work a job that's not trying to give me the finger. ChaCha is a good suggestion; however, right now I need quite a bit of income.

Fuck gas stations. Get a theater job. Or get a bank teller job, and never think about joining the military again, like I did.

Yeah. I'd say a Polymath is someone who's good in many different subject areas. You're not good in many different subject areas, you're somewhat knowledgeable in them; otherwise, you'd have found a job for one of those.
