We should Have something!
I don't think we would need a whole forum on it. Topic should be just fine because we don't have alot of new people.

We DO have a topic, you didn't notice that lol?
Exactly why we should have a forum again instead of a topic.

Also, the newbs don't know about kiwis or eggsongs. Another great reason for the forum.

I like the idea of a forum. The Welcome thread is bloated and awkward and is no less spammy than just a forum. Both would include the new person posting "Hi, I'm new here! I like ... and ... and would love ...!" (or whatever) followed by "Hi ...! We offer ... and .... ... might be a point of interest for you. Have fun!" like 3 times.

If a whole forum itself is too much, then I say just add it to the use of Null. If I were new and desired to post a welcome thread, I'd picture myself doing so in Null or in the Staredit Network forum (were there not a Welcome! forum).

That too. The thought of closing them crossed my mind, but I didn't think into the details. ;o Necroing a welcome topic is a bad thing.

The welcome thread/forum is silly, I don't think I know any other major forums that have one.

Relatively ancient and inactive

Taking into account that the other forums to which you have been are probably Starcraft ones, and that SEN is without a doubt the premier SC website in terms of community base... no, you're silly :P.

I think we should have a forum, and it should be locked (not deleted, people like looking at their welcome posts) after three days or so during which no one posted in said thread, rather than after a set period of time. Welcome threads were nice in that you could discuss many different things in them with the newcomers, in a very open environment and generally unregulated environment.

The forum was epic, but do we actually get enough new posters to warrant it? Someone do some research or something.
From the member list it seems like we get about 3 members per day, most of whom visit only once.

I did some checking around:
CreepColony - No welcome forum or thread.
TeamLiquid - No welcome forum.
GameFAQs - Probably has one, good luck finding it while you're still new. GameFAQs reeks of spam and undermoderation anyway.
Campaign Creations - No welcome forum.
StormCoast Fortress - Forum not available when I checked.
SCLegacy - No welcome forum, but has an introduction thread.
ModCrafters - No welcome forum, but has an introduction thread.
Maplantis (static) - No welcome forum, has a welcome thread.
StarCraft 2 Forum.org - Has an introduction forum.
Starcraft 2 forums.com - Has an introduction forum. It also has undermoderation, massive spambot attacks, etc. (ie, not a respectable site)
StarCraft.org - No welcome forum.
GosuGamers - No welcome forum.
Battle.net - No welcome forum.

Sorry, I didn't mean starcraft forums.org. I meant Starcraft.org Forums, as in Warboards. I think that's still a pretty good site when it comes to starcraft. :O

ugh, sorry. You're right, I do suck at reading. They don't have a welcome forum, but they do have an introduction forum. O_O

I remember our welcome forum and how absolutely absurd it was. The same 6-7 members would reply the exact same post in every single topic, ranging from eggsongs to pies. You can introduce yourself in your signature and people will get to know you through your posts.

Nov 11 2009, 7:38 am Fire_Kame Post #33

wth is starcraft

If we closed down forums for being inactive, you'd be surprised how de-staredit-ized this forum became.

In short...NEEDS MORE KIWIZ. please.

what a stick in the eye

I'd hate to say it... but really... "The problem with communication, is the illusion that it has been made"... - George Bernard Shaw (googled that :P)

It's good for people to introduce themselves, no matter what. Obviously, you can "get to know someone" over time. But anyone who took the effort to put up an introduction of him/her(yea right)self should probably be encouraged to do so...

It's not like the staff here won't make themselves apparent when the newbies do things that they don't like.. or say things that're hurtful (sticks and stones may.. u noe the rest) to SEN.

I think a Welcome forum would be more.. welcoming. It would only benefit the forums, in my opinion.

But then I don't know if being welcoming is still on our priority list...

Nov 11 2009, 9:49 am InsolubleFluff Post #37

@DTBK: What exactly is SEN's priority list?

- Do nothing, but every 6 months start doing something and leave it in Alpha/Beta
- Wait for StarCraft 2.
- Make maps.
- Realise that all the information extracted from maps upon upload is worthless because SC2 is different.
- Fade out.
- Die.
- Rebirth and repeat.

@Moose: 81% currently would prefer a welcome forum over a welcome thread. You can post up lists of sites without one, but by no means should that decide what we do with ours.

I go to several other technical forums and a couple other game forums, none of which have welcome forums. Of course, Moose also proved my point, thanks Moose :)

29 of 35 would prefer a forum. That's basically the whole of SEN's active population
