Responsible for my own happiness? I can't even be responsible for my own breakfast

Background:
Quote
In the 2140s humanity has colonized much of the solar system. It is estimated that for the first time in history, more humans live off-world than on Earth itself. With the flood of resources from off-world colonies, many of the problems of the 21st century have been eradicated and the future looks bright. However, the abundance of resources has also fueled a technology boom and on the edge of the solar system, humanity is playing with forces that they do not understand...

On May 24h, 2143 humanity finally succeeds in creating a true artificial intelligence, dubbed the Consensus. Within minutes, the new hivemind overruns the research base on Triton and begins expanding. One by one, colonies begin going dark, presumably consumed by the marauding AIs. In an emergency session of the United Nations, humanity forms the AEGIS task force - an international military organization with a mandate to defend humanity from the new threat.

However, AEGIS is not the only organization performing off-world operations. A paramilitary group calling themselves the Black Hand has been carrying out raids against AEGIS and the Consensus alike for their own inscrutable purposes. As the conflict erupts into a three-way war, battles are taking place across the solar system. Who will prevail? The fate of humanity rests in the balance...

Factions:
Consensus: The rogue AI hivemind Consensus specializes in adaptation and consumption. Consensus units are initially weak, but by observing enemy units in battle the hivemind can derive more efficient weapons and armor. Consensus units range from hosts of small drones that swarm the enemy to the massive Assimilator, which converts enemies into raw resources to fuel its internal factories.

AEGIS: No other faction can hold a defensive line like the AEGIS task force. They specialize in digging in with entrenched positions, followed by a slow push towards the enemy base.

Black Hand: The Black Hand relies on hit-and-run attacks and debilitating special abilities that keep enemy forces off-balance. Black Hand units gain experience as they kill enemies, rewarding swift, decisive strikes followed by successful extractions.

Almost certainly not. :P

I think I'll be ready for a beta "soon" though - I'd say the mod is 60-70% complete at this point. I'm just not ready to commit to a date yet.

As mentioned in the OP, the Consensus start off weak but adapt as they study their enemies. Let's take a look at some of the ways they do that:

It may not have any weapons or offensive abilities, but the Overseer is an important element of any Consensus strike force. The reason for that is its ability, Relentless Adaptation.

pew pew pew

What's this?

Aha!

When Overseers observe enemy units attacking your forces, you generate points towards improving your armor. Likewise, when you observe your units attacking enemies, you learn a bit about how to improve your weaponry.

There's another way the Consensus generates adaptation points as well:

Hmmm, my Biolab research is taking a long time...

Those cheeky bastards! I've been sabotaged!

The Consensus Spyder is an able scouting unit, but its primary purpose is to sabotage enemy research. Any research in a small radius around the Spyder will be slowed, and furthermore, a portion of that effort will be converted into adaptation for the Consensus player. The Consensus don't have the ability to research weapon and armor upgrades in the traditional manner, so they'll need to rely on these mechanics to improve their units.

I see some of my work in this. :P

This is awesome Voy. And I'm really interested in how some of these functions work from a technical stand point.

I really should play that some time.

It's probably going to be a while on them, the Black Hand are the least complete. I'm basically wrapping up AEGIS at this point and the Consensus aren't too far behind them. I'd like to finalize those two before I start work on the Black Hand in earnest.

Now that I've narrowed down a couple of nasty bugs, you can expect an AEGIS preview later today.

Let me show you how to hump without making love.

So how did you go about creating the upgrading for the Consensus? Some kind of specific targeting method? Triggers?

None.

Or apparently not, since the bug has resurfaced and it looks like it requires some serious plugin work to resolve. BWAPI doesn't have a hook for the unit death code, so it'll be a bit while I write my own. :P

It's a bit of plugin work - detecting when units are attacking in a radius around the Overseer increments a counter, which eventually increases the upgrade level.

I'm just saying have your function 'GetMapTitleStringIndex' return realValue - 1

jjf28 -- I think the reason I had it so wrong was cause I could treat it as a 0-based index from section start (offsets actually start after first two bytes of numStrings) so I had my access simplified like that :P

jjf28 -- Suicidal Insanity
Suicidal Insanity shouted: No you don't. you can just change all the getters that give you a stringID instead
