For various, unexplained reasons (that I'd rather not go into 'cuz I don't feel like risking being judged), I'd like to find a replacement for Skype. After a fair bit of searching, I come to SEN in hopes of someone having knowledge of something that meets my requirements. Thoese requirements are: Cross-platform (Linux and Windows), text-based chat rooms, and the ability to 'call' everyone in said chat room at the press of a button.

XMPP/Jabber is something I know very little about and have only dabbled in to a small extent, but is something I'd very much want to try for this. I've tried a few clients. Jitsi, has text-based chat rooms, conference calls, but no apparent 'call group' feature. Gajim also seems to have the same problem. I never actually tried voice in Gajim, but I don't think that matters much if I can't call a group anyways (though maybe the XMPP service I chose (blah.im) doesn't have support for it, I don't really know how that works).

I personally think setting up your own Mumble server (or renting or getting a free one) would be coolest since you get total control over it.

Hosted a Mumble server some time ago, also tried renting one. Don't have the funds to consistently rent one, and my internet isn't the best to host it. Still, if I can't manage to find something else, I may end up trying to host one again.

As for the link, only thing I haven't tried is Linphone. I'll look into it.

EDIT: Doesn't seem to meet my needs.

An artist's depiction of an Extended Unit Death

There's Google Hangouts if you have nothing against the search giant. The best part is most people already have it on their phones!

Was gonna say the same thing. It's actually quite good. You can also record your hangout if you need.

We've skimmed that quite a few times. I'd really like to try it out, since I actually kind of like Google (in certain areas), but it seems like the only way to use it is to have Google Chrome. Even if I was able to use it in other browsers, I doubt everyone else in my group would be willing, and would require some form of standalone desktop client.

Still Napping

Use Jitsi if you're afraid of the NSA watching.

It works on all browsers you just need their plugin. And if your friends have a Google account (Gmail, Youtube, etc), they already have it.
