Let me show you how to hump without making love.

So Microsoft is trying to jump into the "Create your own world/game from what you give you" market that has been growing lately. The game is called Kodu and is actually not that bad at all. With the ability to program any object that is placed into the game to react towards anything in a simple: When and What format, so that When is fulfilled, it does What. A lot of options are available and then by mixing different options, you can get a very wide range of effects. I am actually pretty impressed with the system and my only gripe is the graphics: It's max resolution is 1280x1024.

The game is available on both the Xbox Marketplace and here for the PC, both free of charge.

So far creations like Geometry Wars, Portal and simple games, have been reproduced.

Eh, it's not that bad. I agree, it has a long way to go though.

Aside from the fact that it's pretty restrictive, you can make whatever you want pretty damn fast and there are no "why cant i do this" scenarios in the game, as long as the object and program are created (which isn't hard at all) you can do it.

A good example is that you could remake Melee SC on this in about 5-10 hours worth of work. No joke.

I don't get it. What's the hook? What's the fun in it? What makes it different?

Not much really, it's a 3d world creator where you can do whatever. You can make fully functioning AIs, bosses, environments, cities, etc. and the best part is, there isn't a limit to how many things are going.

I don't know, maybe I like this so much because it's simple, easy and I've already made most of the systems for a Pikmin-like game.

I mean if you don't like to create things, why are you on SEN? o.O

Also, I still don't get the appeal of this game at all. If you can recreate Starcraft 1 Melee, then go do that and then post here showing it to us :P

Right now it looks like a weak 3D engine at least 5 generations behind what is typically considered 'standard', or 'free' now (UDK).

It's only hook is that you make a game with whatever options given to you, which are limited, yet expansive.

You can detect if a unit sees, is on, is near, is far, etc... From a different tile of terrain, an object, a color, a colored object, etc. It's just a well designed editor and it was made specifically for the 360, not the PC.

And if you didn't know, the StarEDIT Network... -_- ;

The videos won't work for me, in the OP I mean. It's just white boxes for me. Like as if the video will never load or something. Any videos of actual games made with this?

@MZ, visualise a minecraft engine made in 1997. That has a room with some oddly coloured fruit on it. And you're about close to what the OP videos are showing you.

Lol and you think SC2 has 2010 graphics? This game has the same visual competancy as the first spore and almost the same style, just more futuristic and less weird, but still weird.

Cardinal is just, "If I don't love it, it sucks."

The game's engine processes events, conditions and effects faster than most games even today. Haven't run into a problem that wasn't solve-able with 2-5 minutes of my time.

Just thought you should know that its not free on the xbox, it's actually 5$ or 400 points in the market place, looks cool. I Wish I could use it but I doubt my laptop can run it.

You mean like... Conditions and Actions?!

If I wasn't currently burned-out on game developing, I'd check this out. I do have a storyboarding class right now, though, so there's a reasonable flow of ideas that I would be interested in implementing sometime. Mayhap this tool will be useful.

And yeah, they are conditions/actions that are pretty damn straightforward. This game was designed to allow kids to easily use and manipulate, so for us, it's a very expedient way to test and create things. It literally is like programming with a lot of restrictions as to your options, but you can mix them to pretty much do whatever.

This, minus the actually ever developing games part.
