What I'm really trying to do is stack text on some unit names
SCMDraft is only letting my type until the end of the box
if that makes sense. The UI won't let my type anymore even though I have more room for the unit name.
How should I go about editing unit names since SCMDraft isn't cutting it for me
The String editor crashes everytime I open it.
Using Windows 8
Thanks so much! :]

In the case that the string editor crashes and nothing can be done to fix it... and assuming no other suitable programs exist for the purpose of editing strings...
you're screwed see roy's post. Are you sure it crashes on all maps?
Disclaimer: difficult method
If, however, this is the last string you entered into the program, then you can manually edit the
CHK to modify the string
(if it's not the last string that you've entered, I believe you will get corruption/errors (not sure, feel free to try after making a backup), unless you also modify a bunch of string offsets, which is tricky and a lot of work to do by hand). To do so, open the map in SCMDraft, hit Save-As, and select .chk as the type. Then open up the .chk file in
notepad++ (standard windows notepad will not work), make sure you have word wrap selected (under the view menu) and show all characters selected (view->show symbol) find (ctrl+f) what you've entered for the string so far, then you can modify it, save your changes, open the chk file in scmdraft, and re-save as a .scm/.scx file.
You can try using a different
map editor, but the oft' don't play nicely with SCMDraft (due to string recycling) so make backups!

Got it
Thanks so much for the informative post
And yea, the string editor crashes even when I create a new map. I think it's a Win8 thing.
Maybe I'll take another look at the scenario.chk spec

You can copy/paste into SCMDraft and it will enter all the characters even if they don't physically fit into the box.
Following Roy's method, it would be worth storing these strings in a .txt file for future use, in case scmdraft cuts them off unexpectedly or you need to tweak the name in the future, etc.

Hmm. I just tried copy/paste, and I couldn't get it to work. oh well. not a big deal
edit: thanks for the tips with scenario.chk, jff . . . I didn't notice that earlier. I'm going to mess with that.
Double edit: I'm screwed, I made another string after the unit name. Bummer
