👻 👾 👽 💪

but leik dis is ttly awsum 2 typ lololol

I don't think it is at all lazy. It has to be intentional or some strange habit (which the origins would become in question, were it the case.) A lot of it actually takes more effort to type normally (capitalize every word, replace letters with numbers, etc.)
Age/maturity (or just a general acquisition of better knowledge) may play a role in it. When I first got StarCraft I'd use a lot of the acronyms and shorthands (ur, b, r, etc.), but I'd never really had a reason to type before Battle.net so I was slow at it, and a single letter is a lot easier to type if finding the remaining two is a chore. However, in maps from around that time I see better typing. I'd have types (like "colunm" repeatedly in one of my first maps), and this even extends into my first experiences at SEN. On Battle.net I do not type as strictly as it is a lot more casual environment, but I still try to use more complete sentences. Even my friends (who do not type nearly as I do) do type excessively bad (usually about how I stated I used to, but not always.)
I've actually had the reverse of the question asked to me... "Why do you type with such complete sentences?" (or something similar to that, but more like "y do u type like that?".) Why wouldn't I type my best that I am able to? My personal experience is not nearly the extreme that this topic seems to refer to.
Also, how does this extend to actual writing outside of the internet? I frequently hear teachers talk about getting papers with "u" and "r" and other internet shorthands and acronyms.

I've never understood why people type so badly on instant messenging... It's not like whoever you are talking to can't wait for an extra second for a few more letters.

Foreign language is somewhat separate from this issue (being strictly typing and typing language)... That also goes in to speaking.

I just remembered this girl who enjoys sending me text messages... It's so awful. Especially on a cellphone. It is much worse on a cellphone than on a computer, especially to type it!

To answer your question as to why people type so bad while text messaging, I type abbreviations because in my plan, it costs money to send a text. I would text message over 5 texts a day,so I tried to fit my point into one text message. So in short, I'm a cheap person that does not want to pass the monthly texting limit, to do so requires the use of abbreviations. The funny thing is that I could have saved money by simply picking up the phone, and dialing the person instead of sending text messages.

I've never truly typed incorrectly. However, in IMs or on Battle.Net, I might just say:

"Lol, screw the period"
"Lol, forget the apostraphe"

And other minor grammatical errors.
Your errors are more logic, not syntax.

I'm pretty sure it is a mentality. Generally geeks like us don't have much else to do that is funner than starcraft mapping. However, others that don't have as much invested in such geeky things might care more socially and have more friends as a result. I don't know how to explain this part, but for some reason, this mentality makes it so that you think "I don't care, I've got friends if it doesn't work out." However as people grow in maturity, they realize that if they do want a chance for this to work out, they've got to try. I would write more here but I don't want any tl;dr's.

Thigh high affectionado

A simple sentance describes my thought for people who dont take their time to fully put thought and control into their words and typing (Other than guys who type like this srsly to be funny)

Fuck 'em

People who make their words shorter to type faster are the reason we're losing intelligance, our self controlled minds, our thought process, and the very existance of our minds being open.

ᴄʜᴇᴇsᴇ ɪᴛ!

My apologies for not being around this thread, even though I created it. Dead week is aptly named.

I'm glad people have discussed this nicely, even though it is somewhat of a silly topic.

Another aspect of poor grammar/spelling just came to my mind: emphasis. Often times people will misspell something on purpose (pwned) to provide emphasis on the word. I know from my brief stay in Japan that the longer the "thank you", the more respect it conveys. In this case, it's somewhat understandable, and of course, I'm not going to care if only one word is misspelled.

Lord Malvanis brings up a good point:
Quote
Most people don't realize how stupid they look until about 11 or 12 years of age
It's also a gradual process, since as you look back, you gain even more perspective on the matter. Shoot, I'm a senior, and I still think to myself, "I can't believe I did that as a freshman..."

As for this texting business, I think it is another huge culprit. The worst part is that some of my friends decided to start texting me, after I told them "DON'T TEXT ME: I'M CHEAP AND TEXTS ARE EXPENSIVE". I'm just going to wait until my inbox is full, and hopefully the text will get sent back to them, saying something annoying, and aggravating them.

However, it is true that on bnet, I'll frequently not capitalize words (other than "I"), type in phrases, ignore punctuation, etc...

What would be really interesting is to see if bad typers can actually type well, consistently, when it comes to writing a paper or something, or if the bad habit leaks out into their document.

idk if this happens to others also, but every time I go to a different state or country where the people there have an accent, I too will start using the accent unintentionally. I won't even realize that I am speaking this way until someone either points it out, or I stop to hear myself speak. So then, those that misspell and/or try to speak, "1337," need to be informed of their mistakes or uncoolness.

We are not degenerating ourselves, but rather opening up a new language. TehEnglisToo

Other then that, I see no reason why people cannot spell properly. It makes everything much more legible, and formal. Hell, the only reason I learned to spell correctly was because of StarCraft and writing formal papers. I actually learned to type using SC's hotkeys.

Using programs that help improve the English language is out of question, seeing that they don't even bother to correct their mistakes pointed out by the spell check.

There was actually a cnn.com article suggesting using shorthand speak in business text messages. It was a very "wtf, seriously?" article. With T9 and full keyboards, it's very easy to spell out actual words.

When I first came to SeN, I typed like I was on Battle.net because it was faster that way, but when I first came to SeN, I was 12. I wasn't very fast at typing (I hadn't even learned how to type without looking at the keyboard), so that was a factor. Soon enough, though, I found that it was expected that I wouldn't type like a 12-year-old, so I didn't. Fooled plenty of people, too. ;)

As for texting, those have character limits, and I only have 400 messages a month, but I still correct everything. In fact, I go over it even more than most other communication media I use, since to edit it, I would have to send another message.

I came on Maplantis/SEN when I was 12, and was typing 80 words a minute almost completely correctly. Yes, by maturity level has gone up and total mistakes down, but I never really understood why people went L0l1337!.lol1!>.jiaifw!

Wat? We'd ban people on Maplantis if they didn't type legibly enough.

Some people on forums in my country cant even type at all.
They make such mistakes in their own language, that I didnt even make, when i got into elementary school.
And it is not, because they are hurry or young, but they dont give any attention.
Sometimes i could climb onto the ceiling while reading them.
