Uh... like, "/b/" is the only one that's referred to with anything near resembling regularity, to the point that a lot of people think of it as 4chan. Furthermore, DTBK said "not memorizing ... abbreviations", not "not recognizing that they exist".

4chan is divided into a number of different categories - "random" ( b ) , "anime & manga" ( a ) , "videogames" ( v ) , etc. The "/letter/" comes, I assume, from the fact that these represent their urls - i.e., img.4chan.org/b/imgboard.html is the "random" board for which they're so famous.
