Drastic internet slowage

Ok I made a topic on this earlier, but it turned out to just be a site lagging the shit up.

Now I've tested it on a few sites and I am definitely experiencing dramatic lag.

Any sort of video streaming is impossible. I used to be able to watch 480p on justin.tv, youtube.com, and any other site. But now I can't even squeeze out 240p.

I'm no techie, but it's impossible for anyone to steal my net simply because of how FAR I AM from anyone. For someone to even be close enough to my house, they'd have to DRIVE to my house, on to private property.

But here's the oddball, I went on the pirate bay and started to torrent something, and I easily hit 200 kb/s in a matter of moments. What could be causing my problems?

What ISP are you using? <--- important detail!
Is it different during other times of the day?
Is it different for other computers?

Some ISP's choose to place one router (with like 50 mbps) for a neighborhood, if everyone else is using it you'll experiance dramatically lower speeds.

Recently I experianced an internet slow down, my Router literally was showing a slower speed than ordered; when i reset it, it showed the speed I should have and it worked again - a reset might be a good idea.

ISPs will put you under a traffic calming routine if your bandwidth usage is higher than average users. It's in the small print. I had it happen to my university flat internet after downloading Eve and Rift in like a week - in fairness, my other two flatmates also stream a lot of TV and music too. Our internet was literally destroyed - same in the way that none of us could watch youtube videos or do anything online other than read text

Reset your router is one option. Tell us your ISP is the definite option. Phoning them is also viable. Usually (at least British ISPs) are constantly 'performing routine maintainance' and large swathes of the country are reduced to <56kb for a few days.

None.

My ISP is frontier. It doesn't seem like my other computers are going any faster, but I only was able to test it using wireless on my mom's e-book, which is not the optimal for any characteristic.

Actually, yes, it seems (well it is fine right now). Maybe it's just a fluke idk?

An artist's depiction of an Extended Unit Death

I would definitely call the ISP when it's slow and ask why it's slow. Some ISPs will throttle your connection without notice, and usually when you call them you can get them to temporarily lift said throttle.
You: Hey, are you guys throttling my connection?
ISP: Yeah.
You: Can you please stop throttling my connection?
ISP: Okay.

They will most likely tell you why you aren't receiving expected speeds, at the very least (unless either they're dumb or think you're dumb). Either way, calling them will generally be more helpful than generic internet suggestions.

But if you're afraid of phone calls, here's some generic internet suggestions:

1. Try using a different browser.
2. Ping your router. If you are dropping packets, it's your router's fault. Change the channel on your router and see if conditions approve.
3. If you use a browser that supports GreaseMonkey, install the YouTube Auto Buffer script to increase buffering speeds on YouTube (and other useful features that can be toggled by an added button on YouTube).
4. Scan for viruses and remove any that are found. Malwarebytes, Hijackthis, etc.

Then it seems it isn't a problem you can do much for from your end.

If it happens regularly then it might be that the routers between you and the ISP (the things that get interenet to you) need an upgrade, as they might not be able to handle the traffic when everyone is on at night. This is a responsability I should hope your ISP keeps up with.
