NOTE: Please vote TWICE, once for the WAY in which Java was installed on your computer, and once for the VERSION. I know you can mess it up, but please refrain.

I'm just curious from a programming standpoint what Java version most computers run these days. In the old days it was often difficult to distribute Java applications without forcing end users to download megabytes of the Java Runtime Environment, so I'm curious how much Java has proliferated. This is mostly for polling purposes, but feel free to discuss the pros and cons of programming in Java.

I have no idea. I program in java, but I've also had it installed before I started said programming, so I can't say for sure, nor can I say what version either.

C++ > Java
How is that relevant?

Go to Uninstall Programs thing and check in there. There's also a Java control panel in the.. control panel (where else?!) that you can check.

I strongly dislike Java. They have them on the computers at my school, and the Java update thing always pops up. I also despise unnecessary icons in the sytem tray.

I'm going to vote Separator and then Java6, because Java came with OpenOffice.org for me.

C:\Program Files\Java should also contain a folder with the JRE version number in its name.

I also don't particularly like the method that Java updates use to install and I don't like web browser add-ons in general (which could be the main way Java would get used on this particular computer anyway), so I don't have Java on this Windows install. If Java updates were more quick and easy, I might possibly be more inclined to have it install; though I don't like having programs running that are just there to check for updates and have no other useful purpose.

Of course, part of why I don't like browser add-ons comes from many crashes experienced as a result of Flash. I know Java isn't just for web apps, so that is only a small part of the reason I don't have Java installed.

We live in a society.

This is what I did. Uninstall all old Java, installed Java 6 Update 6 from Sun Java.
