So a new TigerDirect factory outlet opened up nearby my town. For some reason the only thing my friend can think about is building his own computer now. He has never done this before, but this is what his "research" has yielded.
(I know, no links. I hate him too.)
Parts:
Cooler master haf max atx mid case 922xm
Corsair cx750m atx 12v 750 watt
gigabyte ga-x79-up4 LGA 2001 Mobo
G Skill Ripjaws x Series 16GB DDR RAM
intel core i7-3820 Sandy Bridge-E 3.6 GHZ
GTX 680
Western Digital 1TB SataIII 7200 RPM
Asus 24x DVD-RW OEM
Enermax Ecomaster ets-t40-ta CPU Cooler
I just used you guys when I made mine for $1200. He's gonna spend 1000 - 1500.
The only thing that jumped out at me was YOU DON'T NEED 16GB OF RAM
Oh god, AND NO SSD?!

Is this just going to be a gaming rig? You could cut from the CPU/mobo/RAM and put in a nice SSD.
Didn't state the GPU manufacturer. I'd not recommend Gigabyte for the 680; their customer service isn't that great. EVGA has awesome customer service, I hear.
I'll put together a build tonight, but somebody else will probably beat me to it.
Gigabyte has been fine with support for their Radeon cards, from my experience.
None.

Looks like a solid build*, except the missing SSD, and there's some components that are more expensive than they need to be:
8 GB RAM is more than enough for gaming+multitasking at the same time nowadays, and will be for quite some time, so you could do with 8 GB for now.
The 680 GTX is great performance wise, but not so great performance / price wise. I'd recommend a 7970 which saves you about $100 and is just as fast.
* since I didn't check what kind of i7, mobo or RAM these are I'd trust Sacrieur on that. If it's true then it's hair-raisingly bad. Wait for Ex to make a build.

Clans, and be honest with me, if I spend the time to make a build for this, is your friend going to listen or just discard it?
The whole thing is crap imo. Well, for the most part. Completely overpowered CPU for starters, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. He went 2011 socket, but only quad core, so he's shelling out an extra $150 on a mobo just for that. He could do fine with an i5. Or just a regular socket i7 if he wanted overkill for no damn reason... And save himself $200.
PCPartPicker says the cooler isn't even compatible with the mobo, but I can't figure out why. Either it's a dimension issue thing or it's really compatible but it didn't list it for some weird reason. Not that there's anything wrong with the intel stock cooler.
"Meh" on the PSU. He could get a great deal on one if he just... Waited.
RAM is completely overpriced. What's wrong with $50 memory?
GTX 680. The most crucial part of the build and it's a mid-high range card. Might as well funnel that money you saved right into this and go for keeps.
No SSD. Gonna be pain with all that loading.
Case is pretty nice. I'd rather a lian-li for that kind of money, but whatever. I'd also look for sales.
None.

If you get the motherboard through Newegg, it comes with 8GB RAM apparently, so you won't need to get the Corsair memory. Which is nice because RAM prices are way higher right now for some reason.
If you're getting an aftermarket cooler, you may as well get a CPU that overclocks nicely. I've been able to get my 2500K up to 4.0GHz without an issue. (I used MX-4 as the thermal paste, if you're curious.)
Is the $150 spent on a SSD really justified being spent there? I have this inkling that the money is better spent going full throttle into moar graphics.Actually scratch that. I thought that was a 7870 and not a 7970.
None.
