To whom it may concern,

I saw your customer service representative job advert on [company website], and think I would be ideal for the position, as I have customer service experience and also have an interest in web development and IT in general. While I've never worked in a call centre role before, I am sure that the customer service skills I have accumulated will be invaluable in this role. I'd definitely see myself as a savvy internet user and have taught myself the basics of web development and website design. [company] sounds like an enjoyable workplace, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Just here for the pie

Seems a bit too basic. I wouldn't want an interview with you based on it, there's no zing that sets you apart from every other person applying that's saying those exact words.

Here, I tore apart my old CS cover letter for you:

Dear <NAME_OF_HIRING_MANAGER>:

I am applying for the customer service representative job advertised on your website, <WEBSITE>. The position seems to fit very well with my education, experience and career interests, and I felt it important to contact you.

Your position requires skills in various types of customer interaction. My <EDUCATION> emphasized <TECHNOLOGIES>. In addition, I have extensive experience working with customers. I have had the opportunity to work for <ORGANIZATIONS>, where I was able to <ACTIONS>. I am very proud of the work accomplished on the <EXAMPLE> in particular. For this, I was asked to <RESPONSIBILITIES>. This was a tremendous learning experience for me because <EXPERIENCE>. My enclosed resume provides more details on my qualifications and experience.

My background and career goals seem to match your job requirements well. I am confident that I can perform the job effectively. Furthermore, I am genuinely interested in the position and in working for <COMPANY>. Your firm has an excellent reputation and comes highly recommended.

Would you please consider my request for a personal interview to discuss my qualifications and to learn more about this opportunity? I will contact you next week to see if a meeting can be arranged. Should you need to reach me, please feel free to contact me at (123)123-1234 or at my email address, jack@staredit.net.

Thank you for your consideration. I highly anticipate your reply.

Sincerely,

Jack the Ripper

It's awful to address to "To whom it may concern." Find the Hiring Manager's name somewhere, or even call their office and ask for the name. Also, if you say you'll contact them if they don't contact you first, it puts more incentive for them to contact you.

The more personal you can make it sound, the more bonus points you get.

'Cept Jack doesn't have any college education and is applying for what appears to be a call center. Also the "Your firm has an excellent reputation and comes highly recommended." is probably inappropriate for a small country like NZ where such a statement comes off as obvious ass-kissing.

What type of company is it? An ISP or something?

None.

The company's called Zeald, it's a web design company. Roy, thanks for the example cover letter. I was planning on replacing the "To whom it may concern" once I found the hiring manager's name, as it wasn't immediately obvious on their website.

Right, so this would be the job ad then?: http://www.seek.co.nz/Job/2-x-part-time-website-technical-help-desk/in/auckland-rodney-north-shore/21432064

Roy's cover letter is generally pretty suitable for that, then. Looking at the site, they seem to be quite a large company and do a lot more than the average "we'll make a website for you" places.

You could potentially replace Roy's "Your firm has an excellent reputation and comes highly recommended." with something about the size/breadth/uniqueness of the company and insinuate that you could see yourself moving up from helpdesk/support to an actual design job in the future. Such a piece would have to be carefully worded so not as to appear too forward, though.

None.

wth is starcraft

I like Roy's as a base. :) Its good to use specifics to make it look like you've at least taken the time to research the company.

Also, if you like work experience or higher education, you can still use experience from high school or activities outside of school, as long as its applicable.
