Hey SEN

http://speedtest.10-fast-fingers.com/

EDIT:
Ryan recommended this website, it's so much better:
http://speedtest.aoeu.nl/

Try it and post your WPM ratio here
Let's see who's the best touch typist in the forums

:)

Still Napping

wpm is fairly inaccurate, keystrokes per minute is far better (ks/m).

That said, I pull off around 490-505 ks/m

This is my best one after about 3 tries. I don't have good technique though, so I could easily break a lot faster speeds if I learned to type correctly.

I use five fingers on my left hand, and only one on my right (two if you count pinky for enter and backspace). If I need to hit a character like a period, I will actually use my thumb to bend my finger inward to make hitting it easy... Lul.

TiKels, yeah, I use only one finger on the right hand too... I'm guessing you've never taken typing classes right? That must be a symptom from people who learned how to type alone ^^

Unfortunately, if I try to type the usual way, my WPM ratio falls down to about 45

I used to be able to type 120 wpm. Man have my skills gotten rusty.

First try:
You reached 423 points, so you achieved position 1727 of 228874 on the ranking list

You type 599 characters per minute
You have 104 correct words and
you have 7 wrong words

104 WPM.

I've done a similar test on Facebook and got to 113 wpm after 5-6 tries. Can't be bothered going any further on this one though. I see the WPM score is just your number of 'correct' words, so I got through 111 words in total.

Not bad for my first try. I was a bit put off in the beginning when I didn't know how it would show the next set of words. I'm sure I could get in the 100 wpm zone easily if I tried.

An except from the book The Essential Guide to User Interface - Wilbert O. Galitz - 3rd edition - p.86 on typing skill
  • Expert (135 WPM)
  • skilled (90 WPM)
  • good (55 WPM)
  • average (40 WPM)
  • “hunt and peck” (10 WPM)

I'm guessing every starcraft addicted is a skilled typist or more
I wonder what are the statistics of an asian though... :P

Did it a couple more times:

You reached 465 points, so you achieved position 707 of 229596 on the ranking list

You type 659 characters per minute
You have 116 correct words and
you have 3 wrong words

113 WPM.

I think that book is nuts if it thinks 135 WPM is expert, because it looks like very very few people are going to reach that sort of speed.

Same, although the fastest typist from the Guinness record reached more than 200 WPM :hurr:

Also, nice skills you got there. My record is 107.

Only 104.. ew. I got 105 earlier, but I think I had more than 1 mess-up on that. :P

A touch-typist is skilled if he can type 60 wpm (300 ks/m). Typists that can reach into the 120 wpm (600 ks/m) range are extremely talented. That book is loony. My mother has been touch-typing for almost a year and she can only pull off 40 wpm-- the author is failing to take into account the people who do not spend 40-60 hours on the internet per week.

That test isn't even a fair comparison. It doesn't take into account many special characters, punctuation, or capital letters.

mothafuck. 120 wpm? Don't make me go all Dvorak on yo' ass, aight? Easily 200+

Obviously we're talking about standard QWERTY layouts.

Interestingly, I managed to typo QWERTY about 3 times just then...

Barbara Blackburn could only manage a peak of 213 wpm, and she used Dvorak.

👻 👾 👽 💪

I hate this thing so much. I hate it. I hate it.
If you press space twice or accidentally hit it early in a word, it fucks up every word afterwards. And when you reach the end it throws me off because it just jumps to a new thing.

Why can't it just be a scrolling list of words and you type all of them as you see them and then it calculates it all at the end. xC Copying stuff sucks anyway. Just let me free-type and then use a dictionary to make sure I'm typing real and varied words.

I missed like 'use' or 'few' or something.. dunno why.

I did this 4 times (tried on a desktop keyboard; slightly faster ... this one was laptop)... My characters per minute seemed to peak around 620. I feel so sluggish and stiff. D: I used to be able to type so freely and fast ...

I'm going to call bullshit here. So far I have the best ranking, and I type like shit. I have basically no technique. Any efforts to try to catalog and analyze my own typing results in incorrect data. I hardly even know how I type.

Farty, you don't have to press space, ever.

👻 👾 👽 💪

That makes this even worse. There are spaces, these are incoherent mass of words that takes way too much thought to process and all of it is just pain and frustration during the whole thing.

No it isn't. It doesn't scroll, it just jumps to a new list keeping the last word and breaks any sort of flow that may have been. (-> "And when you reach the end it throws me off because it just jumps to a new thing.")
And if you mess up a word it disappears and turns red above and you can't fix it, ever. Very distracting.

EDIT:
Tried without pressing space ... nothing was happening so I stopped it. (what the hell were you talking about?)

Again, just let me free-type and then use a dictionary to make sure I'm typing real and varied words (and possibly sentences). That seems like it would give a better result for how fast you are able to type, since there is no finding/reading/processing of words that you see and then try to translate that to typing.

Ah, there are spaces.

I really have no idea what I was thinking, although I have done one before that didn't require spaces.
