So I decided to start playing MTG, as it seems like a fun hobby. Anyone here play?

Yeah, I have a bunch of old decks I haven't touched in years. Last time I played/bought cards, Darksteel had just been released.

Oh god no..
it's worse than Pokemon cards..
in the way that there's no explicit reason to collect them other than playing the game itself... bleh
None.
There are people who just collect MTG cards, in the same way people collected Pokemon cards so that's not very true at all.
Then again it is a game, so I don't see what the issue is with collecting cards to play said game.

Think of it as chess but more awesome. I personally don't/won't be collecting cards for the sake of collecting them; I want to play against people and smashface ;o It's all about the strategy and mindgames and the art of war etc.

I started playing 1 1/2 years ago when Zendikar came out, now I play regularly.
None.
...Zendikar came out a year and a half ago? Wow it's been a while. I remember when I wondered into a gameshop one the day before zendikar was released and I wanted to try out magic and the owner went all RE4 merchant on me and said "heh heh heh, I got something special for you" and pulled out a blue/white. PLayed it for a day then never touched it again.
Do you even have people to play it with? Just play online for free. I forgot what the program is called but it's a card game program where you can even make your own card games and play it online. There was a MTG version with ALL the cards. I think it was called like magic workshop or something.

http://www.magic-league.com/ that's the free one ;o Also it's more fun to play with people IRL, in my opinion. Get a life MZ D:

Magic box god; Suck it Corbo
I started playing over 5 years ago, but since i rarely have someone else to play with i stopped playing. I do occasionally go out and look at the new decks and shit. If i like it i usually end up buying it regardless of the fact that ill probably use it once or twice a year. >_<

Began playing during Tenth edition. Pretty much all my friends began playing as well, and we still do occasionally, although not as much as before.
I must've spent a fortune on boosters, especially during the first semester of uni, as I had to wait almost an hour for the bus three days a week and spent most of that time in one of the two stores which sells MGT in town (they had chairs and a table at the time
). We also used to buy entire booster displays when a new edition was released, starting with Shards of Alara, the last being Zendikar.
I think all my decks are made to play just for fun, no srs bsns. I've got a green Saproling deck, which can powerspawn something like indestructable 6/6 Saprolings/Forests if everything goes as planned, though it seldom does
I also used to have a white deck which was made so that you couldn't lose, unless the opponent had a lot of ways to destroy enchantments. Then there's a lolwut red Giant deck. Not very good, but it has giants! I can post some of my decks when I get home in a couple of weeks is you're interested. The only one I have here is a green deck with lots of big creatures and some stuff to get mana quickly:
4x
Wood Elves4x
Llanowar Elves2x
Skyshroud Ranger2x
Imperiosaur2x
Stampeding Wildebeests2x
Baloth Woodcrasher1x
Jugan, the Rising Star2x
Gaea's Herald2x
Elvish Piper1x
Avatar of Might1x
Molimo, Maro-Sorcerer3x
Primalcrux1x
Living Hive1x
Tornado Elemental1x
Protean Hydra2x
Oracle of Mul Daya4x
Terra Stomper2x
Rampant Growth2x
Naturalize1x
Predatory Focus2x
Primal Rage1x
Windstorm2x
Wild Pair2x
Lurking Predators21x Forest
I played from 1994 til about 1999, so through the Revised (original cards ftw), til about the release of the 7th Edition... There were over 2,000 cards at this point and I sort of lost interest because of that.
There are currently over 4400 cards
good luck knowing 10% of them xD

I believe only a certain number of sets are valid at one time.
I don't play, but the game interests me. If some of my friends were willing to try it out, I'd give it a shot.
Nah brah. that's just a league to play find people to play with. I'd imagine they use that magic workshop program to play with other people. The problem with MtG is that I'm too new and the car number is too overwhelming ;_;. When I was making a custom deck with the thousands of cards I have to go through to pick and choose I just gave up. It was a hassle just to scroll up and down. Too many cards. I just stick to pre constructed. Why don't you play the babby version, yu gi oh. YOU CAN DUEL ON MOTORCYCLES BRO.

I did that twice, but was turned off (so to speak) by the huge amount of overly-cocky nerds there. I'm super nerdy, don't get me wrong, but more than half the people there were trash-talking like crazy rather than just having fun with it. Instead I just played a ton with my friends, and we'd pool our cards together to make decks to share and play. I think I still have that banker's box full of cards somewhere in my garage. My favorite deck of all the ones I created was a beast. It relied on getting a ton of Forests really quickly, and then playing
Tooth and Nail and
Darksteel Colossus. For added defense and that many Forests, I'd have a bunch of
Traproot Kami as well. There were other creatures mixed in, but those were the main things it focused on.

The store I went to yesterday had some pretty nice people there; I doubt all stores are full of trash talkers.
I know have a deckbuilder's toolkit, + a free half pack of cards a guy gave me for free at the store. Waiting for my $40 worth of 1500 random cards to arrive, then I'll see if I can build a fairly cheap strong deck. I'm thinking of going redwhite control/burn, white weenie, or maybe an aggro black vampires deck.

yugioh can be pretty fun sometimes actually. The "ur a little kid" stereotype is preferable to the neck-beard one.

lul, yeah, there is that. But to be honest most of the guys at the store I went to were around my age, give or take say 5 years, and seemed fairly normal, if geeky, guys. Yugioh is alright but it was pretty expensive if I recall correctly, and probably still is. MTG can get expensive but most of the cards cost a few cents.

most of the cards cost a few cents.
All of the commons cost a few cents in yugioh too. The only cards worth money are the reverse secret rare cards (or w/e they are called now) which are a few dollars and the seriously priced cards are cards that you can only obtain through super hardcore world tournament. But I guess you get more cards per pack in MTG. Yugioh cards come with 7 per pack, I think MTG packs come with 15.
BUT YOUR MISSING OUT ON SAYING "You just activated my trap card". Best feeling in the world :<

Better feeling is having 10 lands and showing them a fireball and seeing the expression on their face cos they play monogreen and have no spell removal/counters.
