For my campaign, I want to change one of the unit portraits for a new hero, but I have NO clue on how to do this. I've never modded before, and I just want to figure out how to do this.

I believe they are stored in *.smk files in the MPQ.

EDIT: Just checked. They are stored in portrait\(unit goes here)\(*.smk file) in either Broodat.mpq or StarDat.mpq

ALL PRAISE YOUR SUPREME LORD CORBO

Yes, each unit gets around 3 portraits for different actions. Idle, command and such.
I actually can't remember if it's 3 or more but yeah, they are .smks in the mpqs.

fuck you all

Okay I got the .smk file, but I what do I do with it now? How do I open it or whatever? D:

That, I'm not sure about. I think there's an editor somewhere around. I usually don't bother with portraits too much when making mods, it's just so time consuming.

Relatively ancient and inactive

Err.. why would you need to edit the portrait? Stick it in the MPQ file with the filename of the portrait you want it to replace, and unless my brain is broken, that should be enough.

Because I want to edit a unit portrait. :P I don't want to make a completely new one; I just want to edit Duran's portrait to make it look like a new hero.

I got Smacker Tools, but I don't know how to get to the unit portraits and change them. :hurr:

EDIT: Never mind, I just got some custom-made portraits from SAmods. Can you tell me how to put them back into the game? D:

👻 👾 👽 💪

Replace the old portrait files with the new portrait files (giving them the same name), or edit arr\portdata.tbl to include the filenames of your portrait files in the mpq. It'd probably be easiest to edit the TBL entries of the portraits you are replacing.

Add them to the MPQ with the exact same filenames.
