The sword and the faith

Try to get your hands on Blaze Media Pro. I use it for converting all my stuff and then put it in 320KBPs / 96KHz.

The latest RealPlayer (which may sound suprising..) can download streaming movies, flashes, etc. Using it in conjunction with Winamp, you can rewrite the audion in a .mp3, though you may not get the highest quality you desire. You'd only get what YouTube would be giving, unless what you're DLing has a HD version.

Someone recommended this to me: http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/guides/dvd/convert-YouTube-FLV-video-to-iPod-MP4-video.htm
It works quite well, imo.

I just get the file from yootoob and then use SUPER to convert it to whatever I want (audio (any format) or video (also any format))

mediacoder is slightly better, I think, but super is much more user friendly. I had a hard time getting things to correctly convert with super.

Also, don't forget to use direct stream copy if that's possible on whatever video you're using. Open it up in Gspot to see the audio codec to know what format to output as.

96kbps mp3 isn't that good. Most people can't tell the difference between 96 and 128, however. Typically at 64kbps, vorbis performs best among the audio codecs, but at higher bitrates, the difference is moot.

Oh, and mediacoder will tell you exactly what the codecs are as well.

Well, sometimes compression actually sounds good... some old blues songs actually sound better on youtube than the album version...

I generally use an open-source directory or download.com to look for software (I use one called Pazera Free FLV to AVI convertor).

I usually use http://vidtomp3.com/
Haven't had any problems with that, other than the timer doesn't work correctly on the songs on my mp3-player (it counts five times faster or something, but it doesn't really matter).
Note that you must only include the video "code" or whatever (Like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0). It won't be able to find the correct file if the URL includes that 'related' stuff (Like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu_moia-oVI&feature=related).

Really? I've never had any trouble, ever.

I attempted to convert a video_ts into something slightly better (worse?) and nearly everything I tried took either 80 hours to work or completely failed after taking a couple hours.

First of all, if you want better sound, you should get the mp4 version (or the HD version if possible). From there, you can use a demux program to extract the audio stream directly from the file. I don't have specific instructions for either at the moment. I may post some later.

Download the video into a get_video.flv, then drop it on this http://www.moitah.net/download/latest/FLV_Extract.zip

Works perfectly for me, as it takes the audio channel right out of it. (You can do the same thing with Adobe Premiere Pro.)

The mp4 version, which exists for most YouTube videos, has stereo sound in AAC with a bit rate of something like 112 kbps, IIRC (or it might be a bit higher if I'm not remembering it right). That's the one you want for audio, not the flv. I have no idea what format the HD versions are in, though. I haven't actually tried downloading one yet (and they are still fairly rare anyway, IIRC).

I haven't had much luck finding very many mp4 demuxers, but I did sometime find a program called Yamb that could extract the audio stream (or other streams).

To actually download the YouTube mp4 videos, just search on Google for "download youtube mp4" (without the quotes) and you should find something.
