I'd regard this as a cheat, because of the superior vision it would give to the player. Even though it's only moving the screen (and then compiling the images), it does so in such a useful way that not having to do so manually counts as an unfair advantage.

Okay, this news sucked. Just realize it was my attempt to link to something on CC to coincide the whole affiliate announcement.
I would have so linked to the Legacy of the Confederation Teaser Video instead if it was up at the time.

Hello

It doesn't work for any higher option than the auto-selected one. So far I do not understand the help of that programm.

Quote from Heinermann
This is what the hack does:
Takes a snapshot of the screen for the top left, moves one screen to the right, takes a snapshot of the screen for the top right, moves one screen down, takes a snapshot of the screen for bottom right, moves one screen to the left, and takes a snapshot for the screen in bottom left.

IMO it's sort of "fake". Starcraft's resolution is still 640 x 480, while this hack makes it appear that it is running a higher resolution.
While this method may possibly be valid, it's way too buggy. I can even see the minimap screen moving around to where the snapshots are taking place. If this was perfected, then yeah it would be an advantage. As of now, I doubt it.

I tried it and it's impossible to play. Responsiveness is horrible. I played a quick game vs a comp in single player on 1280x1024 and I quit the game after like 10 minutes simple because I was unable to select unit. It took about 2 seconds after I drew a selection box until the units were selected.

As of now, for replays maybe, but not for games. Maybe it will improve. Oh, and it was no problem having small units. Depends on your monitor of course. ;)

It looks like that is a youtube-like site... It's just a video.
Using Google translation I get:

I was unable to get in-game size larger (so far), but I just started this today.

The BIN dialogs and backgrounds all had to be modified because of Starcraft's NATIVE 1024x768 resolution. :)

I can't upload what isn't finished.

In-game high res is slowly coming to life. (by slowly, I mean minutes, maybe hours, not days)

I found out that the actual game resolution is 672x448, with a buffer of 0x49800. 32 pixels extra for the X and 48 pixels extra for the Y. (Starcraft's "playable" screen is 640x400, because of the HUD)

Heinermann, that's very impressive! I'm curious how you might avoid the pitfalls of McBane's solution.

What would be super-sweet: The ability to incorporate high-res into mods (no complaints about fairness because everyone would have it). I would totally put it in for STF.

Years ago, I was working with DarkWizzard to remodel the entire HUD around. During that time, we found exactly what you are talking about -- if you remove the HUD entirely, there is actually a strip of black that cannot display anything in-game.

I also independently discovered the HUD limits. For bringing it up and throwing it down. It's nice to know why.

;o. I noticed the overflow when playing with SPKs, but I figured it was just something thrown into a calculation.

Hm, so you were able to replace the HUD with own graphics? That would possibly be interesting for the Sons of War project. Would be great if you could explain to me how it works.

That's actually fairly easy, and we also adjusted the location of the portrait. It's possible to even flip the entire menu in a mirror effect, or even put the buttons all in a line across the center.

SDE, BWAPI owner, hacker.

Boo. I'm not skilled enough to get in-game working with a full resolution.
There are way too many constants to change.

640x480
672x448
640x400
their buffer sizes
divide each value by 32 for number of megatiles on screen
divide each value by 8 for number of minitiles on screen
640*32 for next megatile row position
640*8 for next minitile row position
unit/sprite/images drawing size unknown
many other constants

I will still try in my spare time though, when I feel like it. :P
I'll end up probably just releasing the game menu size hack.

StarCraft! + High resolution? = WHERE!?

The linked website seems to be down. If anybody has the distributed files, could they send them to me? I would greatly appreciate it.

I see you !

blizzards always said they consider it an unfair hack like maphack, which is the main reason no hardcore modder has done that...

Since the YouTube link and the link at CC is broken, I'll post another link to the new website for easier reference.

Oh that's a great question - here's what I'd do. As per Hamlet, the upward dynamics could be handled by an Othellan repertoire demanding on-change systematization of the vertical integration. Instead, we'll take the backward overflow into a horizontal integration using market analytics, resulting in efficiency increases.
