If you're thinking of something I might suggest that you make the ridiculous of yourself for her. Girls love that, like, you could sing to her in public (serenade?) or who knows? get creative.
Chocolates are almost always a not a good and very pretentious idea (I wonder if I spelled that right). I always try to avoid them. They're very impersonal, you can buy them anywhere for very cheap prices specially on these days and say nothing IMO. Most of the girls (really depends on the girl) but they'd just go "omg thanks!" but then on the inside they'd be "omg now I'll gain weight and get fat and I'll...blah blah blah".
You could, however, make/bake the chocolates, that'd get rid of the impersonal crap and make it a little bit more special.
What else? Oh yeah, Girls like flowers. (it's a cliche, I know) If you don't know which is her favourite flower then try to find out but don't ask her. Cause then she'd remember/realise you asked her by the time you give them to her.

As many said, it depends on the girl, hell, she could be allergic to flowers or chocolate it's a matter of you knowing what she'll like.
In the end it doesn't matter what the present will be our how expensive/big it will be. Just make her feel special by doing anything, even small things and you should be okay.
