Is it possible to edit the intro cinematic that plays when you first play the game? I found the blizzard.smk and tried to replace it, but that just makes my game crash. Is it possible to change that and the cinematic that follows it? (where ever it is)

What are you using to create your smks?
Make sure you're using the old smacker tools.
That would be the first thing to check.

hehe, the menu looks great so far too.. and I've been working on it all day long, and still only have pages complete.
I'll post up more on it in the future, but I'm trying to make a competition type mod. Kind of a mix between Competitive starcraft (esports), Unreal Tournament, and other sports games. I'll see how it goes. But I want to put some match highlights together to make an introduction for the mod.

I think the old game tools are included in my modding package but I'll have a link for you soon enough.

I'll give it a shot. I found out how to change the intro cinematic finally.
Here's a list of the cinematic files used in starcraft:
http://www.angelfire.com/games5/starcraftfall/smktut.htmIntro files are listed as smc/starintr.smk and smc/starxintr.smk. So just replace those with what ever file and your good to go.
I changed the intro file to one of the campaign cinematics and it worked fine. So something is wrong with my SMK file.

all you have to do is make a patch MPQ that replaced blizzard's with your own. You should only face problems due to the smk format which should be fixed if you use the old smacker tools and pallete issues that you could randomly get or so.

I ripped it off of gomtv.net, just as a test. I took a opening video clip to the starcraft matches. But it does work.

No, I honestly have no clue. What I'd do is put a BIG button on the menu screen saying "WATCH STORYLINE" or something like so, to make clear that the mod features a cinematic. Usually what we do in mods is either hide the cinematic button or make it smaller or in a corner so noone clicks it. I think it's logical for people to click a big button when they see it.
Other than that, I don't know.

A long long long long time ago, there was a campaign created called War of the Tribes. This was the first use of a custom Movie intro that I can think of.
Now one more question about the cinematics... is there a file I can edit so everytime the mod is started the intro plays? I know when you first play SC it plays the intro, but after that you have to manually play it. But how can I make it automatic.
I am almost certain this is a registry key. Meaning that your mod would have to reset the registry. An "installer" mod like ORAI, AAAI etc. could do this, but I don't see any other method that you would include in a regular SEMPQ/FGraft etc.
BUT.. all hope is not lost. Instead of having your movie play as an intro, maybe just play it on the main screen. I think i posted an example in Farty's BinEdit II thread. Let me see.. ahh yes, here it is. This isn't the best example, but you'll get the picture.

There is two values: intro and introX. Most people use broodwar, so I'd use introX.
Set the dword to 1 and it will show the intro.

ok, I figured out how to edit the registry, but is there a way to put the registry file in my .mpq file so it does it on my mod automatically without the user installing a new registry?

Well, like Baja said, you could create a custom installer that "installs" your mod and at the same time it resets the registry file.

You could write a plugin. In the plugins there is a function that is called before SC is executed. Put it there.
