So...I've recently returned to the SC community. I never really left, just kind of...drifted away. When the first SEN died a small part of me died too.

Over the course of my SC career I've started a bunch of maps and only finished about one. And it was the first one I started. There are 3 maps in limbo that I'd like to finish someday. So I'm going to describe them here and get some input on which one you guys think would be the coolest to see.

Map 1: Chrono Trigger
Sure, there are decent Chrono Trigger maps out there. But they really are just the standard SC RPG with units named from Chrono Trigger. CT is one of my favorite games of all time, and I'd like to do it justice in a SC map. My plans were to make this a 3-player RPG - each player controls one unit in the party. Later in the game you could swap out units. The terrain, story, and even dialog in places would be exact replicas from the game. I was going to implement a turn-based battle system with items and such, but those details are a little more hazy.

Summary: full port of CT to SC.

Progress so far:
Rough terrain of 1000 AD and 600 AD. Simple story triggers and good architecture for setting up battles and moving between areas

[attach=1013]

Map 2: Risk
Again, I know this has been done in SC. But not real risk, with dice. And turns.

My plans were to build an entire world map, and burrow units under it that could be given to different players, so you could see on the minimap who owned what area. When it was your turn, you would use a corsair casting dweb to select a territory to attack from, and a territory to attack. Then dice would be rolled, etc.

Progress: all terrain & burrowed units placed. Simple triggers for giving a territory to a player.

[attach=1014]

Map 3: Infantry CTF
I don't seem to have a copy of this map lying around, so I would start from scratch. This would be a port of another game I used to play, called Infantry. The basic idea is it's a 3rd person class-based tactical shooter.

Classes include:
infiltrators, which could cloak and teleport, but were weak
Engineers, which could collect minerals and build turrets
Infantry - nothing special
Heavy weapons - slower, more powerful
Medics

(I never realized how similar this game was to TF2 until now)

This would probably be the least challenging of the 3 to make, but the most interactive and fun. Also the triggers would be very map-independent, so many different playing arenas could be built.

So...I realize that all 3 of these ideas are not original. I guess the truth is I'm not very creative. What I'm good at is solving problems and building cool systems with triggers - so I think I'll be able to execute on these ideas really well. The question is, what would you like to see?

I would finish Chronotrigger. Risk has been done already (normal risk on Starcraft would be boring IMO) and there have also been many arena games.

Chrono Trigger would definitely be the most ambitious, and most rewarding. Check out these other shots of the areas I completed.[attach=1015][attach=1016]

Sorry, I clicked on the link and immediately went blind :bleh:

Hows about you fix up the terrain once I'm done with the parts that actually matter?

Infantry sounds good, mostly for the TF2ness.

My choice? Chrono Trigger definitely.
If I would want to play Chrono Trigger I would play Chrono Trigger, not SC Chrono Trigger. However I will be dead-curious as how/if you will be able to make it :)

Otherwise do Infantry and be sure to have a gameplay which suits the game.

EDIT:
Oh and I hope that the size of that Chrono Trigger map is not serious?! :dontgetit:
To bad you can't just have 1 massive map and change the trees/cities/etc with triggers when you time travel.

Which one does your heart tell you? That's the one you should do. Don't let us tell you which you should or shouldn't do. :P

But since you asked, I'd like to see what you could make with the third one. That's the one you'll probably get to have the most fun with making, even if it lacks the sex appeal of the first two to everyone else.

You should do Chrono Trigger, but try to re-use things more and make them bigger. 1000 AD and 600 could have the same terrain, just some units replaced. Prehistoric could also probably be done without anything new. All that leaves is the Future, the End of Time, and the (?)~200 places you have to put in (tons of different terrain patches could be reused for those, though).

Bah, don't listen to these terrain whores. I like the style you got going there. "Perfect" blends are lame anyway.

However, I think I would play a real Risk game more often than CT.

I kinda agree with devilesk here. The bridges are kinda catchy.
I suggest making the third one, as it sounds easy. Also, CTF maps are probably one of the least used mainstream genres, yet always manage to be funner than most other types of maps.
After you make the CTF map, make Chronotrigger. :P

I started planning an Infantry map shortly after the real game started charging money (shame on them...like heck was I going to give them real cash for a virtual game, no matter how addicted I may have been), but more pressing projects took priority. I'd say go for this one: it shouldn't be too long in coming out, and CTF maps tend to be fairly entertaining, especially if you find a way to do it that isn't like a micro arena with flags.

I absolutely love RISK, but even I'd have to recommend against it. The SC version of RISK is just so much more fast paced while keeping the original concept and strategy of the board game (the versions before unsieged tanks could dominate everyone O.o) that I really don't think the board game would be as fun.

As far as between the other two, it really depends on where your creativities lie. Both maps would need a lot of creative or strategic aspects to it to keep it interesting.. but really, make what you think people (and yourself) will have the most fun playing and you will have the most fun making. I personally thought about doing a complete portal of super mario RPG to SC, but then I was like, why make it on SC when it's even more fun to play on the SNES?

If you do decide to do chronotrigger but then give up in the end, make the terrain into a starcraft-RISK game :)

I would say CTF because it is more fun and strategic.

fritfrat just doesn't want a better RISK map than his out there. ;)
