I have the paid version of MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, protects me from all kinds of stuff, but pretty sure I can still download and run a virus-infected file to compromise my system. Generally the only exe files I download are from torrents that are highly rated, so I don't think I'm at risk of that. I'm not sure what the point of a legitimate anti-virus is, as long as you use a computer intelligently you shouldn't have to worry about it much.
