Still Napping

Thor not pleased by stealing of yummy pancakes.

----

I dare say, I was not impressed by the trailer, and thought it would be a bit of a flop. With Avengers on the way, they really can't screw this up. But it appears I was misguided, and wonderful acting turned this film from mediocre to good.

Thor (Chris Hemsworth) stars the lead role as our lovable and inspiring god of thunder. Things start off in a hurry, depicting a slightly eccentric Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) off chasing some astronomical phenomenon. This of course ends as all good things do: with someone getting smacked in the face with a wet noodle car. Things take a step back from here, in an attempt to explain exactly why Thor is on Earth. Our majestic warrior is the loyal son of Odin. A wee bit arrogant, but charming warrior with all the subtlety of Conan the barbarian. His arrogance becomes a problem once he tries to destroy an entire race for breaking into Asgard (in an epic battle of awesome). Thor makes short work of these frost giants on their own turf, until Odin came and was not the least bit pleased with what Thor had done. He banishes Thor to Earth, where he must learn to shed off his arrogance.

The effects were cool. The storyline was meh. But where it really shined was the Chris Hemsworth. I would give this guy a hug if my arms would fit around him. He commanded the role so well with all of the elements in the right place that I couldn't help but like the movie. He made the movie, and that is not an understatement. Though not to underhand it to the director/writers. All of the comedic elements were in the right place, which is something very difficult to pull off.

I attempted to watch the movie in 2D, but my efforts were in vain, it was exclusively a 3D film, so I went along anyway. I was impressed, as the 3D was not overdone in the movie, and the traditional problem of being unable to focus on action was ameliorated. In this aspect, the 3D actually added to the movie. I like it when professionals do their job right =D.

Yes. I liked Thor. Not loved, but liked. I am very curious to see the Avengers now. With two good actors already, Marvel is off to the right start.

I am the same as you, I liked it didn't love it. It was a cool action movie with neat special effects and great acting and chemistry between Hemsworth and Portman (Hemsworth is an Australian actor so I am glad the Aussies are getting some rep). Nothing really memorable about it, I'm not going to buy it on DVD and re-watch, but it was a cool movie nevertheless.

What I was pleasantly surprised about was that it was NOT a hero movie at all. None of this shit with Thor going around saving screaming humans from burning buildings. This was Thor simply being a powerless human for 70% of the time he was on Earth, to getting his powers back and then leaving again. What I found most interesting about the movie was all the alien culture and the alien civilization, all their nuances and technology, that was the coolest part for me. 65% of the story was set on Thor's homeworld. The part where Thor is on Earth there really wasn't anything going on or anyone needing saving. It was all about the alien civilization and stopping the corruption there.

This isn't an origin movie either, Thor has the full extent of his powers right from the get-go. He then looses his powers, learns a moral lesson, gets his powers back - and off we go again.

So if you're going to see this expecting something like Spiderman/Batman, then do not watch. If you enjoy aliens fighting each other in surreal landscapes with high-tech weaponry than this movie is for you.

Responsible for my own happiness? I can't even be responsible for my own breakfast

I wasn't too interested in this, but then I found out J. Michael Straczynski was one of the writers, and suddenly my interest skyrocketed.
