I have this weird thing that appears on my desktop every 2nd day or so. its an unknown file, and is simple called "~" It can be deleted, but keeps coming back. I have seen it in "My Computer" a few times, but mostly on the desktop. What is this thing, and how can I get rid of it? (Please don't say its like Contravirus...)
None.
Look under Microsoft Files. I'm not sure if its what you have because I didn't read, but it looks right.
My first reaction to something like this would be a virus scan...tried one WITHOUT deleting your little friend?
None.
A lot of temporary files contain "~", so I don't see it unlikely that it may just be a temp file.

What version of windows are you using?
None.
Can you attach a copy of one of them so I can analyze it (Or PM me it if you suspect it's a virus).
I think it's just a temp file. And, does it's name appear like this:
~$cument1.doc
no, i know those are just temps. its just "~" and appears on the desktop.
I was told to save it as a .txt and open it by Lurka, and it was all gibberish.
I am using Windows ME (Phail)
http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=6a2a168fe538b506d2db6fb9a8902bdathere you go, "~"
None.
Filename: ~
File-type: application/octet-stream
This file appears to store e-mail addresses in a fromat not recognised by nearly all my tools. Thus, I am manually analyzing the data for clues as to it origin.

So what was it used for? sending people spam? and how did it wind up on my computer?
None.
No. sending personal details like passwords (I think). But I don't know how you got it.
None.
It is most likely a simple temporary file that couldn't do anything but take up space on your PC.
None.
its not, if you read the whole thread.
