Is there an estimated amount of units a 256x256 map can hold before it lags? If there isn't, what can contribute to unit lag? I'm not talking about map lag, but when units can't fire at each other.

The sprite limit isn't dependent on map size. I can't quite remember the exact number though

You might be thinking of the sprite limit, in that case, it's 499. As for map lag, Tuxedo Templar made a "map lag" tester a long while ago. I don't have it anymore, so, you'll have to contact him (or someone who does have it) to get it.

Nope not sprite. My map doesn't have that many sprites. And there are none of that weird stuff like pylon radii, tank cannons, etc.

There is an in-game sprite-limit, which causes units to not be able to fire. I thought it was around 1024 (but that says 499).

The unit attacks are sprites

Hmm thanks. I guess i'll have to reduce the number of units.

If unit attacks are sprites, can you place said attack sprites in StarForge?

Some. Some crash. Some play once and its over.

And don't do damage

I'm pretty sure that there can only be 100 (or maybe it was 200) units attack sprites occuring all at once.

Well, I know they wouldn't attack. How do you place them? Also, is there a list somewhere of which crash, or do I have to find that myself?

Starforge and SCMDraft I think mark all the well-known ones that crash.

You place them by clicking on the "sprite" tab with the units/terrain tabs.

The unit attack sprites (or any other animated sprite) will only animate once in game, then never again, but doodad sprites (the part of the doodad that you can walk behind) will stay.

There isn't really any point since they can only be preplaced

Some people like to put things like nuke animations over your minerals in melee games. I just think its obnoxious

Yeah, 499 is the preplaced sprite limit, not the weapon limit, it's a bit higher, it all really depends on what units are attacking in the map..

[Preplaced] Sprite limit: 499
Staredit sprite limit: 250
Staredit unit limit: 1650
Starcraft Unit limit: 1700
Starcraft sprite limit: 2500
Starcraft image limit: 5000
Starcraft weapon limit: 100, cutoff of 80 for Valkyrie
If the sprite or image limit is maxed, weapons wont fire. Everything else (but weapon limit, of course) is irrelevant.
