Quote from Rantent
Quote
1 hour = what exactly? a little extra coal?
24000000 J /kg of coal * 35% efficiency (which is good for coal) = 7200000 J/kg burned 40 watt bulb = 40 joules/sec = 1261440000 J/year = 175.2 kg coal per year = 386.25 lbs of coal a year for one 40W light bulb. 386.25 - 370.156 = 16 lbs saved by turning off one light for an hour a day.

Coal wasn't saved.
It was burnt anyway.
Power went into grid, didn't get used. Grounded. Wasted.
This whole thing is a waste of time and resources. Wake up people.

Not really. Power saving awareness encourages more efficient use of electricity. That in turn tells the power companies they needn't make more power plants.

It's a long term thing.

candle.. do you know how power plants work?

If grid demand drops, then the turbines don't need to operate as quickly, and they will use less coal/uranium/whatever the plant uses. It's not like every time you turn off a lightbulb you instantly save coal, but if there is an extended overall drop in demand, then the power plant will use less fuel.

Bah, people never change, they do all these little things like earth hour, and go to hippy concert things. Then they drive home in SUVs.
I hate humanity. Where's the fucking asteroid.

Actually, at 8pm Earth Hour would probably lead the grid to drop its peak output to nighttime levels earlier than normal (there is usually a ~30% difference between day and night output levels - the California grid goes from ~55GW to ~40GW).

I mean, obviously it's not going to stop global warming all by itself, but it certainly isn't counterproductive, and, yes, the idea is to raise awareness.

Please, do us a favor, if you're against this that much, saying things over and over again, why can't you just 'not post'? I can just smell a JordanN/Kellimus/Praetor/devilesk clone in the air...

I'm pretty sure hating other people as you seem to makes you pretty damn emo.
After all, wouldn't want society trying to societize you, everyone else just sucks, you're so damn special.
Yeah, not emo at all.

Personally I think we should use a whole lot more hand crack generators.
Nobody has any idea how much work goes into electricity, if they made their energy source themselves, they'd First: stop having to lift weights to be buff, Second: realize how precious electricity is, Third: Stop giving money to a bunch of people who do nothing.
