Back* from the grave

Actually, by any logic other than computer logic, he might have a point.

But this is computer logic. Whatever told him that installing the same thing twice would give you double the first thing, he's wrong.

Working in IT...

We were in the process of upgrading everybody in the office from Windows XP to Windows 7. We told everybody to back up everything they wanted on their machines to their personal mapped drives...

Anyway, I take my coworker's computer, and ask her if she's backed up everything. She assures me she has, so I wipe the computer and install Windows 7. Turns out she made a backup of everything she wanted and stored it on the hard drive of the machine, lol. All of her work over the years, gone, even though she's had access to a personal mapped drive for years, and even though the IT team has encouraged users to store all data on the drive anyway.

Of course, it was my fault that she lost the files and she was angry at me. Made for some pretty awkward elevator rides, haha.

It is your fault for failing to properly indicate the difference between backups on the computer itself and the mapped network drive, and for not double-checking where she had *actually* put the backup.

It's also your fault for assuming that the common person is computer literate.

It's the bitch's own fault for not fucking knowing how to back up, and then saying she did. If she wants to cry about it, sure why not, but to pin the product of her stupidity on him is just fucking ridiculous.

I'm sorry, but no. Just no. You shouldn't have to hold someone's hand.

To be fair, Windows Backup stores backups to the same hard drive as your OS drive, unless you tell it to do otherwise.

With the recent computer classes Ive noticed EVERYONE has to take now in the educational systems near me, It seams a little impossible to not know how to back up a drive. And this is that retarded class where they teach you how to use Word, and then Excel, and then fucking command prompt for no reason. I mean, command prompt is good knowledge for when you need to set up things, with the security of the lack of a UI, but hey, not everyone is going to grasp that knowledge. :awesome:

Every new hire was trained on the usage of network drives on day 1. Our team emphasized it with nearly every meeting we had with other coworkers. Periodically we have emails going out reminding people on IT policies. I left out was the part where I offered to do the backup process myself, too. I don't disagree with you that there is some responsibility on me, since as an IT person I should know better than to trust the rest of my coworkers. I shouldn't have gotten lazy and should have checked. Still, I think her being angry at me/aggressively emailing me is crossing the line.

I managed to recover some of the data through data recovery tools, but not that much :\
