I ask again, how much time per day does this take? I can spend a few minutes on it probably but not hours and hours.
Red classic.

Have you not played a browser based game? It's like one of the three different kinds. It's the kind where you "build something" and you get income after a certain amount of real time. Log in once or twice a day. Spend all your money and gtfo while it builds for an hour.
None.

I have played several, but some like dead frontier require hours of gameplay to be any good, whereas ones like urban dead require a few minutes each day to be good.
Aight I'll sign up, username Jack.

Gonna try it now.
Okay.. I'm at 1:155:12
So it's a web based game?

In the beginning, you start with 1 planet and almost no income. Buildings take mere seconds to complete. After a few days, buildings start taking a few minutes to complete and safe to say that this trend holds true for all aspects of the game - which is what largely generates it's success.
Everything increases exponentially as you play, and as the universe gets older. The more active players will increase slightly quicker than you, and as the whole exponential factor kicks in - they will be the ones on top. The game boasts different play styles to suit any kind of gamer (Raider/Attacker/Fleet-smasher for the very active and Turtle/Defender for the largely inactive).
As the game goes on you can get fleet-crushed, so it becomes imperative that you save your fleet at any given moment. You essentially send your fleet on a mission at a certain % of it's normal speed, with the aim of signing in to oGame a few minutes before your fleet returns home. Two things of importance here: 1) ALWAYS fleet-save. 2) ALWAYS fleetsave on a mission which allows you to 'recall' your fleet.. 3) ALWAYS sign on before your fleet comes home. This allows you to recall your fleet, because, let me tell you... there is nothing more terrifying than seeing your fleet returning in 60 seconds, and an enemy hostile fleet about to hit your planet in 61 seconds. And you know then, that in 62 seconds, your months of playing will be completely undone as you lose your entire fleet.
Tl;Dr, logging on 10 minutes a day is enough to play this game and stay in the upper 20%. Devoting more time to espionage (scouting opponents' planets, finding undefended 'farms', unsaved fleets etc) is what will put you further ahead. With good timing you can still pull off big hits, rake in lots of profit and only log in for about 15 minutes a day - provided you have the intel to know who to attack (through an alliance).
None.
Ugh, I'm finding the game extremely wordy
and not in a good way like in Echo Bazaar...
.. don't think I'll be getting into this one, sorry.

If I can go into the negatives with energy then whats the catch? Why build energy plants (or w/e they are called)
Your resource plants won't be as effective. A quick analogy would be Protoss Buildings without pylons.
None.
Oh god. These new universes have the 'new and improved' GUI... Not sure I'll stick around. I preferred the old style.
Anyways, I've applied for the Alliance and I'm at 2:197:12.
Edit: Another gem of knowledge for you, when sending out your first colony ship - you want to aim for slots: 7, 8 or 9.
This chart shows the field sizes of planets according to their slots in the galaxy (1 to 15). The size of a planet determines how many buildings you can put on it. As a general rule of thumb, anything less than 140 should only be invested in for mining and short term expansion. For extremely competitive and long term play, you'll want all your colonies to have 200+ slots. This takes a lot of patience and a lot of scrapping and recolonising but is worth it in the long run. The new redesigned universes mean that there is no limit to the number of planets you can colonise - previously, you had a limit of 8 colonies + your Homeworld. Always keep one planet slot open for a 'staging' base. If you scan enemies in a far away galaxy who have a shit tonne of resources, set up a planet nearby and harass the hell out of them.
This is the battle calculator you should be using

So... does anyone actually have a working shipyard with any kind of fleet yet?
None.

I have 6 Spy probes and one Small Cargo ship that I've been sending out to farm off of the inactives...I could make fighters, but honestly I'm trying to shore up my Metal/Crystal harvesting right now.
EDIT: According to that battle simulator, Loveless, you'd lose. That is, ignoring all researches we both have, because I apparently am unable to see yours now Battle on Fight at [0:0:0]
Result | Defender wins (100%) | after ~ 2 rounds
Debris Field 4.800 Metal (30%), 4.500 Crystal (30%) ~ 1 Recycler
Moonchance Not enough ressources in the debris
Losses Attacker 16.000 Metal, 15.000 Crystal and 0 Deuterium
Losses Defender 5.500 Metal, 500 Crystal and 0 Deuterium
Theoretic Plunder 0 Metal, 0 Crystal and 0 Deuterium ~ 0 Large Cargo
Real Plunder 0 Metal, 0 Crystal and 0 Deuterium (0% Booty)
Needed Fuel 0 Deuterium
Flight times 00:00:00 h
EDIT2: Actually, doubt it would matter much, you'd need 7 heavies to make the chance close to a draw, and even more for a win.
EDIT3: It would also take some time for you to get here, in which I imagine I'd be able to build one more lazar, just in case
