Lame Defense. Taught me a lot of what I know about SC1 counters, and probably helped with my strategy in SC2.
Evolves (actually they've done it already...).
The Shadow Experiment RPGs.

I would not consider the evolves that is out a new map... It does not use any new concepts that was added in sc2, This was a sc1 map converted to sc2. ( It does not count )

Alone in the Dark- One of the very first (if not first) horror maps, Its hard to make a map on SC scary but with SC2 I'm sure you could make something truly horrifying.

Random Fighters (2)- One of my favorite maps, it would be a blast to play on SC2 with all the new units and such.

Thats all I can think of right now haha, but definitely Golems needs to be remade as already mentioned.

An actual Magic: The Gathering card game. Or those arena-type MTG games.

You're all forgetting one thing...

The most fundemental and universal SC 1 defense game; Marine defense 10-way with space terrain!!
Everyone knows that map, no need to describe, right? ^^

I'll do it and make it much better than the sc 1 version xD

... as soon as I get the editor. :)

Helms Deep and Diplomacy both need to be remade. Those games were so fun, and with the data editor they can finally be balanced and have tons more options.

Also, I'm making a Resident Evil RPG.

You guys are likely going to torture me to death for even suggesting that such a map is as great as the personal favourites that you've mentioned, but...

Volcano Run.

No. Think about it. It's extremely simplistic now, but imagine what you could add to it in SCII, to push the limits of the concept and the game engine.
  • Depending on how robust SCII's physics engine is, liquid physics could be used for actual lava, that floods areas, runs down the mountain, etc..
  • You don't have just one mountainside now. You've got the whole fucking mountain to put obstacles on!
  • Various tunnels and subterranean paths to (temporarily) evade the lava.
  • Third-person point of view with more advanced microing. Sprinting, jumping, wall kicks, a full movement system!

Imagine this in your head.

You're running downhill as lava rolls down to engulf and burn you to ash. You sprint, run under a rock face hanging overhead, and come to a wall. You jump onto a ledge protruding outward. Jump to another ledge. Jump to a third ledge. Wallkick (N-style) to that rock over hang. Pull yourself up, and run along it, perpendicular to the path you were taking earlier. As you travel along, you see imposing cliff formations with chunks of glowing, gooey lava and crystals on them. You break rocks to get them out of your way. You bash in the skulls of wild creatures trying to rip you limb from limb. You deviate from the path on occasion, sometimes finding shortcuts, sometimes finding secrets, and sometimes falling into traps -- you can never really know. You take shelter in underground paths as lava rushes ahead, but even as you do so, you know that those paths won't remain safe for long, and you must hurry -- and you must get to the other side before the lava does, lest you exit your cave and walk straight into the red death.

Fog obscures your vision as you proceed, the acrid, sulfur-scented, rust-colored haze making it hard to see. You get to a pit, with platforms you must jump to to reach the other side. You jump from cliff to cliff, ledge to ledge, knowing that one misstep, one badly-timed leap, one jump at a wrong angle, can cause you to miss your target and hurtle down into the lava. And you know that you must hurry, for the lava is rising, and should you fail to make it across in time, the platforms that are your path to salvation will be forever engulfed in flame, as will your entire body.

I'm surprised no one said Cat and Mouse. No fucking square terrain!

Ignoring maps that are already being made :P, and maps with way too little description (i.e. RPGs.. well which ones?)..
Current Nominations are:
  • Smash TV!
  • Normandy Invasion/Diplomacy
  • Mini-Game Maps
  • Evolves
  • Alone in the Dark/Horror maps
  • Random Fighterz
  • Racoon City
  • Life of a Civ/Simulation
  • Crash RPG ('nuff said)
  • Marine Defense 10-way
  • Macro/Micro
  • Volcano Run (with physix)
  • Cat and Mouse
  • Squad Support
  • Space Pirates RPG
  • AstroGears
  • Five Samurai RPG
  • Alpha Marines
  • Dodgeball
  • SCV Football

This list isn't big enough at all. I'm pretty sure we can do better.
...
Squad Support...
i mean, this is such a classic game, and can be made extremely difficult in SC2, what with nydus worms coming out the base's ass. And just imagine all the new squads that can be picked. One thing I hated about sc1 squad support was that there's no way you can pick an actual squad.. it's pretty much randomized. but with the UI, it'd be a lot ezier and neater.

Space Pirates RPG..
I donno if this is the correct name, but it's the RPG where you have BC as the 'main ship', and other ship fighters can go into it to fix itself. This game was AMAZING, and I still love playing it. An SC2 remake can shave off a lot of problems, and make this RPG epic. And, anyways, specialized ships = win.

Astrogears
Lemme tell you, I hated astrogears in sc1 because it is waay to complicated to have any meaningful gameplay. But SC2 will change this completely. Imagine your own customizable battledome bearing down on things.. it's like epic StarWars style... can't go wrong with this.

Five Samurai RPG...
Classic. Imagine actual swordplay mechanics.. not just elemental spells and stuff. And maybe an actual storyline, which'll be easy to do with the UI.

Alpha Marines..
Real weapons, without the micro required. Same bloody, balls-to-the-face action + chainsaw. [/shameless advertisement]

Guys.. try to think of some classic maps that just should be made for the heck of it.
Then think of maps that can be hugely improved by SC2's editor. ;D

  • Volcano Run with liquid physix, realistic third-person movement with sprint and jump, multi-axis movement around the entire mountain, branching paths, caves, jump tests, and incredibly awesome terrain

Hi Vanished,

Welcome back!
D'you enjoy your vacation from SEN?

...
Anyways.. I'm still pretty dissapointed at the list :\ ... are you all really this cynical that not that many maps from sc1 should be ported to sc2?

Hey those are some neat maps...

Tho read carefully next time, this thread is for maps that NEED to be made in SC2, not maps YOU're going to make in SC2.
[/uberburn :awesome:]

Tho actually...
Dodgeball does Need to be ported... tho not with the exact same gameplay mechanism as SC1... I'm pretty sure people can do better than that o.O

And SCV Football... tho again.. not sure if the exact same gameplay should be ported..
The scv football in SC1 worked due to pathing issues and general numbness of SCVs .. I doubt it'd be the same in SC2
