We can't explain the universe, just describe it; and we don't know whether our theories are true, we just know they're not wrong. >Harald Lesch

Just asking, but has someone mentioned UMS maps can even qualify as premium? I kinda thought about all those perfectly balanced melee maps for the koreans...

OVERWATCH STATUS GO

Maps can be premium because of UMS maps. When talking about premium maps, they only talked about Hero Wars, Tower Defense, and DotA.

They used dota as an example of something that wouldn't be premium.

They said that one of the reasons maps can be sold on Battle.net is because of maps like DotA and Tower Defense that have since had pay-to-play offshoot games. DotA itself may not be premium, but it's plight is one of many reasons maps can be premium.

During the panel when mentioning "these are the kinds of maps that users can make premium," they were talking about DotA, Tower Defense, Footman Frenzy, and fan-made RPGs.

I fully support the premium maps as long as people can use there revenues to buy maps as well...

And all of these premium maps should have demos or the premium version be a updated and expanded version of the already classic...
Suggestions to this idea is that once the map becomes premium they should dedicate more server power to it (dl time)

It would be impossible not to use the revenue to buy maps considering the revenue is real money.

I have mixed feelings about the issue. Of course part of me is like, OMGWTFBBQ PAY FOR MAPS!???!?!@#RG, and the other part is like, what exactly am I paying for. If you watch the video from blizzcon where they describe what they mean by premium maps, I can understand some reasoning to it. They say that the map has to be the equivalent of counter strike, a mod of half life for it to be considered premium. As long as "premium maps" are actually such conversions of starcraft, I don't really have a problem with it, although I'll probably never buy a premium map, yeah.

If I were willing to whore myself out and if I could figure out how to make my maps fun for a change, I'd seriously consider trying. :P

They also consider DotA to be a mod, though, too. Their definition of "mod" basically refers
to any custom map.

And we still don't know for sure who makes maps premium. It was my impression that the creator can charge for their map, not Blizzard.

I don't think it matters who decides whether or not maps are free/premium. The fact is unless you have an extremely unique/quality map no one is going to buy it. If some nub out there wants to make a map and label it as premium, let him go ahead.

I for one am actually kind of excited about the opportunities here. I mean I have ABSOLUTELY no plans to Buy premium maps ever, but I think it it very cool that we all have the possibility to make $ off of one of our favorite hobbies, Map Making!
I for one love designing things and making fun experiences and maps for people to play (that is, im still learning how to make maps, so not really many are great fun for people) and I love doing it.

I say, gj Blizzard, even though it will probably fail. :bleh:

Having plans to an unspecified and non-existant future products is contradictory in itself.

Relatively ancient and inactive

'I think when I get SCII and wait a bit for maps to come out, I'll buy the most-downloaded just to see what premium maps are really like.'

Disprov'd.

No. Because you've specified a map. 'The most downloaded'. But anything could go wrong. From 'no one downloading any premium maps at all because of its cheapskateness and other good free maps around.'
