Firegraft Crashes Starcraft

I ran Firegraft, edited a small handful of buttons, saved without any MPQs, and ran the .exe file. The game loaded, I loaded a melee map, and when I go to click on any unit (either an SCV or the Command Center) the game crashes. Just to make sure it wasn't my modifications, I created a totally new .exe from Firegraft with NO modifications to any of the buttons. The game still crashed upon clicking a unit or building. I'm running v 1.15.1 (because its the latest Firegraft-compatible version). Granted, I've only done this test so far with only the Terrans. I haven't tested to see if the Zerg or Protoss crash this way. Any help please? :flamer:

Try re-installing Firegraft and remaking your EXE. If that doesn't work, try re-installing StarCraft.

Reinstalled Firegraft, remade exe. Game still crashes. Reinstalled starcraft, game still crashes. Reinstalled Firegraft again after reinstallation of Starcraft and patching to 1.15.1, remade Exe, STILL crashed. Any other ideas?

Try running any other Firegraft-ed mod. That will tell us if the problem is with FG or SC.

Okay, I ran the Galactic Unrest mod that used a Firegraft .exe and everything ran fine. I didn't click more than one or two units, but it didn't crash.

Okay, I've upgraded my Starcraft (Brood War - I've been using BW the whole time, not sure if this makes a difference, sorry I didn't specify this earlier) to 1.16.1 as well as my Firegraft to be compatible with 1.16.1. I created another new mod from Firegraft and did not make any changes. I just saved the exe and did not load any mpq into it. I ran the exe, clicked a unit, and the game still crashes. Any ideas?

This might have nothing to do with it, but try making it with an mpq rather than without. I'm only mentioning this because all of the cases you've mentioned that it didn't work were without an mpq (unless I didn't notice where you said it). If you've already done it, then just ignore this message. If you haven't, however; then try it out.

I did fail to mention this, thank you for bringing it up Shadow. Actually when I first created the mod to test it, it crashed and to make sure it wasn't my MPQ archive that was causing the crashed, I remade the exe WITHOUT the MPQ and it still crashed. That's when I made the unedited exe just to make sure it wasn't something I had done while editing the buttons. This is pretty screwed up eh? :(

If there's no known solution to this can someone point me to a program that does basically the same thing as Firegraft? I just want to edit the strings of text and the buttons of certain buildings and units. Thanks.

The last version of FG is corrupting the unit\cmdbtns\cmdicons.grp for some reason (at least that's what happened to me when I've used it several days ago in the 1.15.0 version of SC), so SC will crash whenever you try to select any unit or building (look at the file size with WinMPQ to see the error....).

Try using the GRP file I mentioned from the other MPQ Starcraft has, inserting it in the .exe you created with Firegraft.
The crash was very annoying (I use WinXP SP3 too) until I get this solution.

I hope this helps you.

When you say GRP from the other MPQ, which should I get it from, StarDat or BrooDat?

BrooDat. StarDat has many blanks on it....

Okay. I need to use something like WinMPQ to access the BrooDat file and extract the cmdicons.grp file to...where?

You must also open the executable file with the MPQ viewer. Then, add the cmdicons.grp to it in the "unit\cmdbtns\" folder.

Okay, it didn't crash. So that's a good thing. Am I going to have to put that grp in every time I make the exe to test?

There is an mpq that came with FG called like Data.mpq or something, you could probably put a working cmdicons.grp in there and it will be fine (unless the problem is with copying the file and not the file itself)

That cmdicons.grp is not defective. Apparently Firegraft does something to it, that severes many frames (or some other file registers or headers, I don't know....) and makes the .grp useless. With the options menu, I outsourced the cmdicons.grp from other folder, not from the Data.mpq, and it's the same crash. The best you can do is replacing the cmdicons.grp every time you work with FG for now, until the bug is solved. A good idea would be to notify this bug in the FG developing thread..... or maybe it is already known.....

This is very interesting. I haven't encountered this problem in the FireGraft version I've been using for 1.15.1, when making quick test mods to look into solutions for people's problems. Where did you two download your copies of FireGraft from?

I see, could one of you post up the resultant grp? i'd like to take a look and see what it does to the file.
