I think the only reason we're surprised is that usually we'd think that starcraft introverted geeks with no social lives would be the last people to do drugs.

I'm actually mildly surprised how many drug addicts there are on SEN.

LOL, who's addicted DTBK?

This might shatter your world but plenty of successful and intelligent people enjoy a toke and other drugs once in a while. Carl Sagan was known to smoke weed.

I guess you could say so, however you don't go through physical withdrawals such as other drugs, it's the same habit forming behavior such as running or swimming.

For example, basketball is a big part of your life, if you don't shoot some hoops for a day you kind of feel out of it. If smoking weed is a big part of your life and you don't do it for a day, of course it's going to feel weird.

However, with no weed, it's not like a pothead is going to kill someone over a dub whereas heroin addicts would kill for a fix (if they were already in that extreme of a rut)

Well...

Quote
1: the quality or state of being addicted <addiction to reading>
2: compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance (as heroin, nicotine, or alcohol) characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal ; broadly : persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be harmful

If he can stop whenever he wants, it's technically not an addiction.

My point exactly, there have been months where I've smoked weed every day then just stopped. Sure, there was a want for it but I wasn't going to go out of my way to get my "fix". I just stopped for a couple of months because of the situation I was in at the time.

Yes, but...
"i don't know what i would do without my daily bowls!"
Perhaps he didn't mean that as it's being interpreted, but... there's a reason it's interpreted the way it is. P:

lol I work at IBM, and im only 20 i think im pretty "intelligant" oh yeah and me and my wife we make 76k a year, and i just graduated high school, and im about to get promoted. I have actually been offered up to 90 hours a week if i would like to take it, but thats too much i did do 72 hours this last week. Even if i am addicted, it does not matter it doesn't effect my life, i almost guaranteed i make more money then most of sen. Im only 20 years old, if i make 55k already, imagine when im 30, most people my age can't say they have a career but i do. lol P.S. Alot of people at ibm actually smoke weed its kinda funny.

Good sir if I was making 76k a year I can guarantee you'd never see my ass on here, lol.
No offense to SEN.

Also moose, maybe you should be rethinking that post, he was referring to what someone else said and misspelled.
I also think he said that his wife and him make 76+ but HE makes 55, maybe not though.

To previous posters: I can understand if you guys don't particularly like recreational drug use, but come on, disappointed? I'm not any stupider for dabbling around in drugs. I'm not throwing anything away. If anything, I probably threw away more of my life on Battle.Net having fun than I've done through recreational drug use. Just something to put into perspective.

Haha, well as far as contributing to society or making something of my life, pretty much. I took my focus off of school and spent my time playing video games ;) I enjoyed it though, so no worries!

It's chemically impossible to become addicted to weed. Sorry.

It's chemically impossible to become addicted to weed. Sorry.

It's a fine line between what is chemical and what is psychological. I won't debate your chemistry, however.

I won't make this thread into a moralistic crusade for or against drugs, but I do look negatively on drugs and their users. None of the traditional categorical statements are true ("All druggies go to prison/have no prospects, etc."), and it is certainly possible to be good or successful and use drugs. At the same time, I think it is fair to say that success is not because of drugs. I find it perfectly possible to lead a happy and fulfilling life without ingesting or inhaling chemicals to try to control my mood. I see no need for or benefit in drugs, and especially when they are an expensive and often illegal habit, it seems like an exceedingly poor choice to do drugs. I can't stereotype and say that everyone that gets high is trying to run away from something, but certainly a common reason for getting stoned/drunk/whatever is to try to escape the real world. Not to mention, buying illegal drugs funds a black market economy that results in thousands of deaths a year (see the violence in Mexico).

One of the things that bothers me about most drug users coherent enough to argue intelligently is that they think themselves superior because they are not "sheep" who follow the establishment's anathema on drugs. Of course it is possible to use drugs in a responsible manner and lead an otherwise normal life. But someone like Ashamed comes off as a little belittling of those who don't agree with him.

Quote

Most people of age 20 indeed don't have a career; they are working on a college education. While many will probably not make $55,000 a year with their diploma, there is nothing superior in getting married and becoming employed immediately after high school.

In short, drugs are not going to ruin your life and prospects, but I see them as a totally unnecessary habit that is better avoided.

But DTBK, what do we consider necessary? Are video games unnecessary? What about sports? There are few things I would consider necessary in life. What makes drug x any less worthy of being necessary than any other recreational activity?
