"What's up, Y'ALL?"

So I am from a souther State notorious for using "ya'll." Personally, I don't use ya'll; i use things like "You guys" or "You douche-bags", etc. IMO they sound so much cooler.

but I don't get why people have such a big problem with y'all...

One of my friends is from Chicago and she's been telling us how she cringes everytime people say "yall", especially when professors and such don't mind such words so long as they are not in formal papers. We were like having a mini debate over this, but she just wouldn't understand. Ok, I understand that there's this stereotype of us southerners that we have southern accents, like those of George W Bush, and that they typically aren't as smart as city people.

Yes, "yall" is informal and technically not an english word that could be found in the dictionary; it's just for some an easier way of saying You all. I don't get why northerners have to be such douche-bags as to think that "yall" is so taboo. I mean, just because some of us use "yall" doesn't automatically relegate us to dumb rednecks or anything :P

So I just wanna know what you guys thing.

What I thing is that anyone who attributes a speech style with an associated image of human value is being ignorant and overly judgmental. If they can't complete the picture themselves past a simple speech habit, then let them get offended. This filters them out of your interactions. Ya'll shouldn't associate with those kinds of people, anyway.

I use it all the time and I don't even have an accent or southern affiliation of any sort.

I think we've just grown up in a society where we have been taught that people who say y'all are uneducated.

Meh, I use lolspeak with my friends occasionally (and then a lot of them don't get it because they aren't on the tubes much), so if I thought people who said "y'all" are stupid, then I'd be just the tiniest bit hypocritical.

Should be "y'all" by the way. What's with the bolded G?

You are also giving the stereotype of all northerners giving you that stereotype.

I don't like it because "You all" sounds fucking weird. Especially since it's usually only addressed to a single person.

Try as I might, I still let the occasional "y'all" slip.

However, I only use lolspeak with my brother and my best friend.

More than that. It's quite unfortunate

I know not all northerners are like that. But I do know that a good number of them do so.

👻 👾 👽 💪

We are actually taught in my Latin class to use "y'all" for the 2nd person plural. :P

I have no problem with it... then again I've grown up around people from Texas (my father) and Southern Utah (my grandmother and that whole side of the family)... so I hear all sorts of weird words and sayings all over.

I've seen people making fun of such phrases before, but I've always actualy liked 'em.
As some may've noticed, I tend to shorten phrases a lot, myself.

Relatively ancient and inactive

MA pisses me off now. Damn southerner. Speak American, damn you! NOT MEXO-AMERICAN!

On a more serious note, it doesn't really bother me, but I associate it with a buck-toothed farm boy. Cartoons, or something of that nature, I guess. Blame the media.

The funny thing is some people know who use y'all would either have or purposefully throw in a southern accent. One of my friends worked at a sandwich restaurant and would always be like, "Would yall like some mayo with that" with a southern accent. Its hilarious.

My family and some other families when on vacation to hawaii once and one of the natives their asked where we were from. We said Texas and they were like, "Oh Texas eh? Howdy!"

I can't recall anyone I know ever saying "y'all". though sometimes people wouldn't articulate "you" and "all" well and it'd sound like it...

I don't have a problem with "y'all," but I have a serious problem with people who use "jk" or the like. Maybe it's because I associate it with teenage girls who have little respect for others and are typically lazy, be it in school or at a job. Not that I'm saying all teenage are like that, I just associate the two behaviors.

Despite what people say, American is not equivalent to English, though they're easily understandable by each other. Armor vs armour, color vs colour and other similar differences exist between the two, not to mention the pronunciation differences.
